Is there a cover of some kind that goes over the batteries in your picture? I'd be nervous about the exposed terminals.

I believe yes, and it's a piece of wood that just covers the top, screwed down by wing nuts. Two metal rods on either side are part of securing the wood in place.

perfecto ALL! now if someone would measure or even eyeball the distance from the back of the box to the trailer body. it appears that it could be sitting tight BUT I think a 1/2" or so would be best. ??

I think 1/2" would be a bit to close. measuring from the hinge, mine is about
1 1/4"
