Tar specks on lower areas
We washed the Escape but there are lots of black specks in the wheel well area that we did not remove and such marks in other lower areas. If it is tar, what can be used that will not eat into the gelcoat or whatever protectant we have? I figure Goo Gone is out. I aspire to have Alf's pure white wheel wells.

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
There possible stone chips from traversing gravel roads. You can fill them with wax and disguise them.
Or just ignore them like I do. To me it just means your using it and you been some where really cool and exciting.

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
Devil Dog, I am pretty sure it's tar but now I do see where someone said that he used Goo Gone and did not damage his fiberglass.
Yes, we have been somewhere cool and exciting!

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
there are all sorts of tar remover type products, clean varsol used sparingly works well but I would imagine any of these things would remove any sort of wax you habe on the gelcoat.

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
Well if your sure it tar from road repairs and such then a fossil solvent like kerosene or diesel fuel will most likely soften it and some elbow grease will remove it. But only do the areas affected, rinse with some soap and water dry and then slap some wax on it. Good a new till the next time. Oh joy..!

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
totally agree with Glen---our trailer was a mess from three weeks worth of bus/tar/bison poop/cow poop----it washed up like a dream with the Bug and tar stuff and still beads up with the water...

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
Thank you all. It looks as if the bug and tar remover is exactly what we need. It even has some kind of waxy or protective finish that it puts on at the same time. Also seems to be available at every auto parts store.
Anna-Marie, we'll do the bison poop route a little later so it's nice to know it works for that!

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
Doug was able to put it on--let it sit a bit-- then it cleaned up pretty easy he said--he had done the whole de-oxidization earlier in the summer --so I presume that all helped...

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
When all else fails and you don't have anything else available.. try plain ole Original Coke. I know someone that removed roofing tar off the roof of an egg using Coke and it worked better than products that were manufactured for that purpose!

Re: Tar specks on lower areas
Coke works good to clean fresh water tanks. Also battery terminals on tow rigs.
