Thing-A-Ma-Jig

Hello All,
Sorry for this thread name but for the life of me I don't know what to call what I am looking for. Here is what I want it to do: I wish to add a strap to keep my refer and perhaps some cupboard doors closed. It looks like ... well ... an eye for a screw, a vertical leg (perhaps 1/8"), and then a flat area of about 1 1/4" ( Velcro will be attached here), then back to a 1/8" return and another eye for a screw fastening. Its a bracket like a flattened 'U' shape.

So what would these be called and where did you get them?

Sorry my description is so poor. But I want to keep my refer door closed while traveling rough roads.

Thanks for the help ahead of time,

Tom

You can try child proof locks also, I have had success with them.

What you are describing is called a “footman loop.” You could Google it, and they are probably available on Amazon or Strapworks.

Think about it. Tom has to be able to get in himself.

I found some at an Ace Hardware. It took a while because I didn't know what they were called, either. I used them to secure my fridge door when I was having problems with the door.

If it's just for while traveling, how about using some spring-loaded curtain rods like these?
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Dec...346P/203676633
One rod could keep your fridge door closed on one side of the center aisle and two or more cabinet doors closed on the other side, depending on how you arrange it.

I want no holes, so I use a bungee and existing hardware to secure the door.

When do your cupboards and fridge open? Are you 4-wheeling with them? Maybe I just drive on too smooth of roads... I don't seem to have this issue. On the fridge don't keep too much weight in the door. Anyway ... just wondering what kind of driving make your cupboards and fridge open. Bill

To be honest, I've always wondered about doing that. My concern would be that the vibration of the cord would mark up the panel. But since a number of people seem to do that I guess it's not an issue.

Got the bungees at Can Tire. The hooks are plastic, not metal, and no sharp edges, so I've had no problem with scuffing.

Thank you everyone!
I learned something this morning ... after 50 plus years of stumbling down hardware store isles, I never knew the name of this bracket.

I just ordered the 30mm black plastic footman loop from Amazon and plan to install similar to Jon's and MyronL's installation. ... combining with a 1" wide nylon strap and Velcro or a plastic Bison belt buckle. Bison waist belts are sold by REI and I have been using them for years. Best quality is that they pass TSA airport scrutiny (no metal parts). Design objective: I want this strap to be removable when not needed.

Hopefully, I'll never need my refer to pass through TSA xray machines 'cause likely it wouldn't pass either TSA standards or Health Dept. standards .... but then that is another story ....

Thanks for everyone's help ..... Footman Loop .... mmmmm!

Tom

No, I'm not 4 wheeling with my trailer. My refer door has never opened while underway, but I think a strap is a good idea. 4 ordered brackets cost (I'll only use 2 on refer) about $7.50 from Amazon plus strap and strap fasteners. Much cheaper and easier than cleaning up the mess if the door should open. Some here have even ripped their refer door clear off .... yikes!

The only cabinet doors that have opened while driving are my wheel well cabinets where I tend to store tall - narrow based bottles, with 750 ml of interesting liquids. Disturbing to find them rolling around the floor ... fortunately none of them broke.

Overall, my cabinet and refer latches have done impressively well .... in spite running over the trunk of a giant Sequoya, an adult moose, numerous deer and an occupied police cruiser .... of course ... these stories will have to wait for a late night campfire.

Tom

Or you can buy the bungee cord by the foot at Home Depot / Lowes I think and make your own length. Thus eliminating the hooks in the middle.

Dividers help. We've never had a runaway wine bottle.

Hey Charlie,

Those look interesting. Do you make those dividers. Bet they would help!
