Thanks for your input on this, Carl. I too was not understanding the rational. That campground owner seems to be making up stories.

Perhaps he was selling Coca Cola to sanitize black tanks and needed to drum up sales.

I was told the culprit formaldehyde kills the bacteria necessary for breaking down solids.
Solids are difficult to pump and therefore the cost is more.

We are now using the non formaldehyde product. It is not as effective and is more expensive We are using more to control smell. I guess dead bacteria can't produce smell.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a holding tank product with formaldehyde in it these days. It appears to be a selling feature.

Given that a septic tank at a campground has flows from the bathhouses (showers, sinks, and toilets, the amount of chemicals in a holding tank when someone dumps (not everyone leaving dumps) isn't going to have a negative effect on bacterial action in a septic tank. And honestly, people who buy Ridex are wasting their money. When all the bugs in a WWTP get killed by chemicals, if the wastewater personnel cannot reseed using a bucketful from another WWTP, they dump cheap dry dog food into the wastewater flow. Rather than using Ridex, go to Wally World and get some Ol' Roy, then flush a cup into the septic tank every couple of weeks.

Yes, "formaldehyde free" is certainly a common selling point, and likely anything with "natural" or "eco" in its name probably doesn't have any. On the other hand, the very well known Thetford holding tank deodorants lineup has four lines, and among them at least Aqua-Kem and likely Campa-Chem include formaldehyde.

Absolutely correct, Jim. And when I want them to party, I feed them scotch or a good craft beer. Of course, it is recycled!
