I fall into Eric's camp. The more sue-crazy people have gotten over the past couple decades, the more manufacturers have packed their owner's manuals with "CYA" disclaimers, such as, "Do not operate your electric hedge trimmer in the rain." Duhh....

I have to say, I've used torque wrenches all my life for important things like cylinder heads etc. but I'd never heard of using one on wheel nuts until I got an Escape. I've raced cars that didn't have the lug nuts torqued and no wheels ever fell off. But torque specs seem to be the flavor of the day. My new bike came with a long list of torque specs for every single machine screw.

Pork fed Iowa boys are pretty regular with the use of a good torque wrench. That
Is because if we give it all we've got either the stud snaps off or the threads strip out.
1/2 inch wheel studs are not all that strong.

Had to laugh at your comment about being regular using a torque wrench, made me think about the mathematician who worked it out with a pencil......

Wait that is how the whole Torque Off contest started......

And that's why they make the wheel lug studs replaceable!

Well that's a steal of a deal for a click type. If I didn't already have, umm, a couple, I'd be tempted to buy another at that price.

It IS a heck of a deal. Everyone knows you should torque the wheels after a change, whether new tires or a flat. And no one wants to carry their very expensive torque wrench for that once in a 'while' use when on the road.

We ran one of these Harbor Freight wrenches out of the box for Accuracy against two different calibrated wrenches in the $250 range. At 95 ft/lbs on the calibrated wrenches, the Harbor Freight wrench read 93 ft/ lbs. Plenty close enough for lug nut specs. We gave the wrench to the winner of the Mississippi River Rendezvous Torque Your Nuts contest when we had it for three years pre Pandemic.
Pick up a cheap single socket and perhaps a short extension so you don’t have to raid your presentation box and you’ll be good to go.
Torque the nuts, check the tire pressure, look the tires over for wear and sharp rocks between the tread before you get going in the morning or after dinner when you stop each night. Take an ice pick along to flip out those pieces of flint that work their way in. Ice pick in one hand, beer in the other.
Don’t get mixed up and poke yourself in the lip. It smarts.

I didn't want to start a new thread.
New owners will need a torque wrench. Harbor Freight has theirs on sale for the next couple of days with THIS coupon. Note the 1/2" size is included in the sale.

Wow, what a deal. If I needed a spare for my spare one I'd grab one.

They are pretty accurate especially considering the price. We Checked one against two calibrated wrenches and their 95 ft lb reading was 93 on the harbor freight unit. A cheap 6 inch extension and a socket and you’re good to go.

Yessir. Used these in my shop. They are durable and get the job done plus no biggie if they get lost.
