Tow Question?

I'm downsizing like a lot of people.
My tow vechile is a f150 5.4L with a 9800 rated tow cap.
On my old trailer, I used a equailizing hitch.
Is this required or (recommended on the 19 escape) as it is 2250lbs?
Also what is the ball height? I'm guessing at 18 inches to the top of the ball?
Thanks in advance :-)
George

Re: Tow Question?

I brought my 19 1000+ mi. home from Canada without a WD hitch, and no problems, towing with an '06 Tacoma. I think the dual axles on the 19 help.

I later got a WD hitch, primarily for a smoother ride in the TV. It helped with that, and made the whole rig feel much more solid as a unit.

Bottom line for me: not necessary, but nice to have.

Re: Tow Question?

I pretty much echo what Bruce said. I still don't bother with one. There are a couple instances, less then 1% of the total time pulled, that there were conditions where it would have been nice, but never have I ever felt it was a safety issue, or I would be on it like a dirty shirt.

Re: Tow Question?

When I picked up our new 19', with my TV, a 2008 Toyota Highlander, the rear dropped about 1-1/2. Reace and my son suggested the WDH. So on it went.

Funny thing is that previously we had a 17' Casita that had a tongue weight of 400 pounds (or 360 pounds with 2 bikes on the rear) and had no problem towing. As the Highlander is 4WD, the WDH can only help. I haven't yet weight the Escape, but I feel it has a lighter tongue weight (and a h_ll of a better trailer!).
