Tow Vehicle to Trailer Connection

On my 5.0TA I'm getting an intermittent loss of connection when hooked from to the DIY in-bed connector, if I move it to the factory installed under bumper receptacle it works fine, at least for as long as I had it connected there.

Did some measuring and wondering if I could get someone out there to check theirs.

The trailer side of the connection is a male Bargman, the in bed is a Pollak, and the factory under bumper just says Ford.

In either connection the Bargmen goes into it's mate 1", and most of the pins are recessed a further 1/16" in the connector.
The pins are set back on the Pollak 15/16".
The pins are set back on the Ford 7/8".

Looks to me like on either connector the actual connection is just barely being made, with the Pollak questionable at best. Sure seems like the metal to metal connection should be more then 1/16th of an inch, but it's not. I did insure that the locking tab on the female side was engaged in both instances.

That's the problem I have. The one that comes on the trailer doesn't fit right with the vehicle-side. I found one that worked slightly better but it still doesn't lock into place very well. When I tried it without the housing on the car side so you can see the connection there is a gap. I have a tester which fits fully into the car side. I'd be interested to know if anyone has one they know fits all the way in.

Mine stays connected but just barely.
