This is going back and forth from sea level over the Coquihalla hwy and the Okanagan connector which are 4000-5700 ft high passes. Can get 30 mpg when not towing. Key is to keep the speed down to 90-95 kph overall and 80 kph (50 mph) going up the steepest hills. Fuel consumption increases notably above that. Not holding up traffic as these are 4 lane divided highways (speed limits up to 120 kph). Note this is in reference to an imperial gallon which is 1.2 times a US gallon (ie miles/US gallon will be lower). Love my truck and trailer, needless to say!
Oops... meant 87 octane!

When I upgraded my 2009 Ram to my 2014 Ram, the rear end gearing and 8 speed automatic made an improvement to the same type vehicle. Mileage efficiency increased from 12 mpg avg to close to 15 avg.

The Tundra is well worth the MPG, the trade off for Toyota reliability.

I wonder about the new Silverado, 2.7 litre 4cyl big turbo, This will push Toyota to improve thier numbers.

My 2005 Tundra’s manual says that you should disengage over drive when towing a trailer. There is a button on the shift column to do this. Do newer, larger model Tundras have any such towing options or recommendations? With OD disengaged we get 10-13 mpg, depending on the terrain and speed.

My 2007 Tundra has a "Tow/Haul" button that takes it out of high gear. The manual says to use it when towing "heavy" trailers, but does not define "heavy". The Tundra is rated for 10,000 pounds towing, so in that context I really don't consider my Escape 19 to be "heavy". I use the Tow/Haul feature on hilly terrain, but not on flat stretches, such as I-5. I believe all the newer models also have this feature.

My 2014 Ram has tow / haul . My owners manual was not real clear about exactly when to use tow / haul mode so I called Ram . The answer I got was use tow / haul anytime you are towing a trailer that’s what it’s designed for . Since Ram recommends using tow / haul and I paid for that feature , I use it whenever I am towing . I may get slightly lower fuel mileage but for me that is not a major concern

With my Dodge Ram, I found towing in the tow mode on a 7000 mile trip did not impact my mpg any more or less. That said, the tow mode does engage engine braking down hills as well as "eco" on flat terrain where the engine shuts down 4 cylinders. By locking out overdrive, the engine is protecting itself from any harm that could happen if towing in overdrive. I feel "safer" in the tow mode, both from driving as well as using my vehicle the proper way it was meant to be used.

Thanks everyone for the great information on Tundra mileage.

I parted ways with my reliable Tacoma and bought a Ford certified low mileage used 2013 F150 5.0. Nice roomy truck that gets about 14-15 mpg towing our 19. The downsides are the rattles, peeling paint, minor cab rust, leaks when it rains, and a few too many service visits. Wish I looked at Tundras...

Hi: All. I took a major detour into diesel territory. 2016 Ram 1500 V6 Eco D. freeway towing at speed gets 24+ mpg. Not towing city/hwy gets 27+ mpg. Figures arrived at using old math not on board computer. Alf
