Trap door key ooooops
We brought a new 21' footer home to Montana in late March. Now we're about to hit the road. For most of the summer we hope.
There is a small perhaps 24" by 12" inch trap door on the port side (USA driver's side) of the front of the trailer, that opens from the outside to storage below the bed.
I came home from Chillawack with a red bandolier with 4 or 5 keys on it. But none of them seem to work that trap door. Is this a separate key or is it the same as the main door......and perhaps my mechanism is jammed. Or did I lose that key somehow. How do I know?

Look for one marked CH751. It's a key that's common in the industry.

Thank you. That worked. Once I knew which key it was (ch751) I was able to fight with it and get it in there. If it ever stops raining I'll squirt some graphite in there.

I find if I approach the lock with the key tilted at a slight angle (toward front or back of trailer) one will work.

The hatch door is usually a tight fit (a snug seal is a good thing to keep water out), so it helps me to push in on the door while I turn the key.

It's a ten minute job to replace the hatch locks with Ace locks - the round keys are far less trouble prone than the basic standard ones. Here's a link to the set on Amazon that are the correct size, 7/8" shaft works perfectly. And you can call the company and order additional keys easily.

Best idea I have seen today, but I notice that the key cannot be removed from these particular models in the unlocked position. I may pick up a set, but I will order ones which allow the keys to be removed once unlocked. Thanks for the information David.

Did you use the straight or offset cam?
Re: key removal.
One commenter on Amazon said that he simply unlocks the latch, opened the door, relocks the latch then removes the key if he wants the door to remain opened. Reverse process to lock the door.

David You indicate that the 7/8 inch shaft works perfectly. Would a 3/4 inch shaft still work?
I'm using your Lynden, Umatilla and Heyburn campground recommendations for the pick up trip

Bad idea in my estimation - when locked, the cam will be in the way of complete hatch closing, which will prevent sealing, and could bend something. There are lots of comparable cam locks available without this issue, so why put up with it?

David, when you say "easy", what do you mean? can you list the steps, briefly? thank you.

The offset cam fits best.
