My water heater light no longer goes on when switched to "On". I thought the bulb was burned out so I put in a jumper to take its place. I purchased and installed a new bulb, but it didn't light up, either. Upon further evaluation I found the heater goes on despite the lamp not lighting. It seems I also learned polarity of wire connection to the light matters. Is there some other reason for the light not lighting other than it being defective? I hope it's something simple as I'm no electrician.

Ours usually does however sometimes doesn't, or oddly seems reversed. Who knows, but the water gets hot and we turn it off when not needed or while towing.

Normally light is on while heater is trying to light. When successful, the light goes out. Sounds like you have an opportunity to adopt Jim Bennett's fix, which adds an LED that stays on as long as the heater is on.
