Water Heater Puddles

Just finished the last trip of the year and spent some time camping/parked on concrete pads. We usually are on gravel or sand. I noticed there was a significant amount of moisture on the concrete directly under the water heater vent cover. I would say the concrete was wet, puddles are an exaggeration. I opened the heater cover and nothing was wet and dripping, though there was some moisture. Never encountered this before, is it common? Perhaps the cooler temperatures cause this?

Re: Water Heater Puddles

Paul I noticed some water leaking from our pressure/temp relief valve on our water heater. I pulled the lever to open it a bit and reseat it, and since them have not noticed any leakage. Ours is the dual fuel and it was running on AC when it did that.

Re: Water Heater Puddles

I found the same event with our dual fuel heater in either AC or propane. As Paul said, reseating the lever solved the problem.

Re: Water Heater Puddles

The water in the tank expands as it heats, and a bit is forced out -- one reason the relief valve is there, and the bit of release is OK. I read a procedure somewhere that went like: after the hot water tank is full and before heating water, turn the water pressure off (pump or city spigot), open a hot water tap and then open the relief valve to drain a bit, thus creating an air pocket in the tank that will prevent dribbles when heating water. I've been too forgetful to try this myself yet, however.
