I like all the non-wimpy reactions to rainy weather in this thread. Somebody really wise once said, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing choices."

When we got a day of heavy rain at Wells Gray Park two weeks ago, we and our campground neighbours didn't mind at all because it broke the drought BC has been having and soaked the fire-prone woods really well.

I agree with the folks who posted about enjoying the coziness of an FG trailer during a downpour. Just bring indoor stuff to do and good rain gear, and rain will enhance the trip.

Have to confess, I'm a bit of a pluviophile. The wife is kind of the opposite, but it works out.

We camped at the beach once with the horses it poured the whole time. I was sleeping in the horse trailer so dry and warm but no place to hang. We unhitched and drove to an Irish bar spent most of the weekend there great live Irish band. The horses had rain sheets and lots of hay.

In the PNW, if I went home every time I got rained on, wouldn't get much campin' in. I use my awning, or a screen room or if it's really cold, stay inside until it passes.

Hi: rbryan4... Wow... The more I know... The more I know... I don't know.
It hasn't rained here in a few weeks. That's because I haven't washed the trailer!!! Alf

You must be happy all the time, Mike.
As I recall, you described traveling and having the rain follow you everywhere. We in SoCal were so hoping that you would visit our towns.

I did visit northeastern CA, and it did rain, or at least sprinkled a bit. In fact, the area didn't look that dry and I was told later by a resident that they had had enough rain earlier in the year. Everything looked green. And yet 30 miles north of me was a raging wildfire that killed a firefighter. I don't quite get it.

After traveling with four or five kids and needing to make sure they were amused, now we're alone and rain just is not an issue If it's not too heavy we hike anyway, if it's a constant downpour we read and we eat.The reason we got a trailer in the first place way back when was because tent camping with kids in the rain was not enjoyable for us.

After this previous summer I would change the question to ask, "What do you do when it's too hot to move and you're not camping at the beach?"

Guess I'm just a bit of a wuss when it comes to a lot of rain.

After 4 days of rain on the ME coast hanging out in a damp trailer, wet clothes hanging anywhere they could, and the bed feeling like a damp towel, we headed home 3 days early.

3 days of heavy rain at a state park in mid TN left everything damp again. Had power at this CG but even running the A/C wouldn't dry it out. Found warm damp was better then cold damp.

I've also found putting on wet rain gear to go out fishing in yet more rain, puts a damper on things.

These were pre Escape days, haven't hit much rain as yet with the Escape. Had a few days of snow in WY which didn't bother us.

Sometimes it probably makes sense to just go home. So far we've been so far from home that it wasn't an option --

Alf don't worry it will rain when you go camping on the 29th the trailer will get its rainwater wash. I alone or we have had eight nights in the trailer this summer on four trips and the only rain was at night so don't know what we would do during the day in the rain.

We leave here next Tuesday for southern ON, a wedding then visiting around then off to your rally then the first Mississippi one. Hope you keep the nice dry weather around.

Adrian

A rainy day in Iowa

What do I do on a rainy day? The same thing I do every day at 2:00.

We just upsized from a Boler 13 to an Escape 17 specifically to accommodate inclement weather camping, not just rain -- the Boler was just too small to effectively hang and dry either our clothes or ourselves, either after coming back from a wet-weather outing or to sit things out if it was really ugly out.

Since it's just the two of us, lots of two-person games, Scrabble, crib, Yahtzee, lots of reading or, in my case, audiobooks.

And my other new retirement hobby -- learning to watercolour paint!

That, and the awning sure beats the tarp we used to hang when we Bolered -- great tarp but often a nuisance, or worse, to put up.

Here is a solution we have used: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brian_...ll/9367758608/

We were camped in an unserviced campsite in Tumalo State Park near Bend Oregon in July 2013 with temperatures near 90 deg. F. We used:
  • Shelters to keep out the sun
  • Maxx fan to keep air moving powered by our solar panel
  • Drank lots of water

Something I had forgotten about.

After the last time we got washed out, 3 or 4 years ago, we decided in the future we'd just go find a nice hotel if it got to the point where we wanted to head home. We think a day to dry up would restore the spirit. Especially relevant now that we are taking long cross country trips.

How come nobody mentioned a bit of hanky panky to pass the time away? Beats reading or movies. Not so great with kids and grandkids around though.

Kidding aside, if it is daytime, we are outside doing something, whether under the protection of the awning, donning rain gear and exploring, or going for a drive. Always something to do.

I have set up many, many tents in the pouring rain. Not something I like to do, but it can be done.

Around here, one would never go camping at all, if you didn't go when the weather was forecast to be off.

Lol....your post reminded me of the lyrics to "Raining on Sunday" Jim.

'Pray that its raining on Sunday
Stormin like crazy
And we'll hide under the covers all afternoon
Baby whatever comes Monday
Can take care of itself cuz
We got better things we can do
When its raining on Sunday...'
