long before codes. I'd go to Endicotts's with the confidence that they would have whatever I needed. Numerous times reacting to my most radical request, the clerk would squint, scratch his head
. and tell me "yeah
I think we may have one"
follow me. Off to the very back of his store where he would open a trap door in the plank flooring, pull a chain light switch
lighting a ladder to the catacombs a secrete floor below (oh no
. the public was not allowed there)
after blowing dust and rummaging through the shelving
. he would hand me a box with the exact item that I needed
. Manufacturer's phone number in four digits maybe just two. That store never let me down no matter how obscure my request.
Hindsight is always 20 / 20
but I sure wish I had offered to do inventory for free. Now a Tee shirt store and a diamond ring palace sits in its place all to service the cruise ship industry.
Where is your favorite hardware store?

When I lived there (58-61) the place to go was Rusher's Hardware. Long gone now I'm sure. Rusher's son was a classmate of mine. Rusher's ran the Salmon Derby of the week all season long. My mom won one week bringing in a 42lb King Salmon. My dad had to crank up the 25HP Johnson b/c the 3HP trolling motor could not keep up and the reel was about out of line after the fish had run 2 times seeing the bottom of the boat.
Right across Front St. was Percy's Drug Store serving fountain drinks at tables.
Did Endicott pick up Rusher's? I seem to recall Rusher's was demolished by a fire in the 70's or 80's.
For me I like Montana Ace Hardware Store in Kalispell. They are local and stock lots of merchandise at reasonable prices.
