Window shade strings broken

Ned and I are on the road in California, and the strings on two of the shades have broken. Has anyone had to restring their shades and was it easy? I believe the rails are aluminum, definitely not PVC, which cannot be repaired. They do sell a kit and provide a video, (I'm wondering if this is an ongoing problem.), but because we are on the road and catching up with mail can be problematic, and not fun, I called the shade company to find a dealer that would sell me the kit, but she said she couldn't provide that information, that I would have to go through ETI, which seems strange, but I do have a call in to Tammy. Just thought I would pick your aggregate brains.

One of my plastic knobs shattered, Escape sent me 2 new ones and I had to restring and reinstall the shades.

I need to restring one shade and recently bought the kit for about $25 from Camping World. The kits are available on Amazon but I could only find white not the beige color we need. CW had the color we need. Haven't done the work yet but it doesn't look too complicated.

Hi Alf,
Soak them in black tea and they will be beige. That is what quilters/ fabric artists do,

I had to mail order as that was the only place I could get the right color.

I recently changed the small shelf I made that goes under the emergency escape window. Needed to make it a longer shelf, extending across the bed. Why I didn’t do this the first time, I don’t know.

Shelf’s primary purpose was to protect my back from leaning against the window shade spool. You don’t want to bust that spool.

The perfect shelf support is the black window corner brackets those two plastic spools use for tension on the strings. One screw plus the two bracket holding screws. No harm, no fouling of walls.

But, if you do this yourself and if you let it get away from you and the string retracts into the shade, tension on that string will cause great dismay. It happened to me. Lucky me I was able to fish out the 2 strings quickly, and I mean lucky.

Ouch, that's definitely a pain Myron.

Nice job on the shelf.

Hi: rbryan4... I restrung the rear window shade so my "Grands" could play them like guitars. They also managed to pop the screen out of the "Emergency exit" window... even I have difficulty with that one... and shut off the kill switch even though we have a cover over it!!! SHEESH
BTW MyronL... Nice work on the shelf. What's next? A padded back rest. Alf
