winterizing

Thought I'd bring this topic over to where it belongs as it has morphed.

OK. So far I've bought the air compressor, I got the Schrader valve and adapters to connect it to the water inlet. I drained the fresh water tank, removed the anode for the hot water and drained it, opened all the faucets, powered up the air compressor and found that I need yet another adapter to screw into the water inlet. I need a male and I've got a female. I also discovered that my pressurized air is Escaping ( sorry ) mainly at the point that the Schrader enters the quick connect for the compressor hose. Took about 20 seconds to empty the compressor and it wasn't connected to the water for lack of an adapter.

So, I'm having a beer and pondering my alternatives. I like the one my buddy chose. He took his 19' out to Tammy and Reace and left it there for winterizing and storage.

Re: winterizing

I think I've done it.

After spending $15 on a Schraeder valve and all kinds of adapters to attach it to the water inlet, I found I needed yet another adapter. If I'd gone to an RV store instead of ACE hardware, I would have been sold a device designed for the job. It's simply a threaded piece of plastic with a tire valve in it. Cost $3.98. It screws into the water inlet. I also had to get that thingmajig that you use to fill a tire and attach it to my air compressor.
The Old Bag opened on tap at a time while I filled the lines with air from the compressor ( at 50 psi ). She observed some water and water vapour coming from the taps, but not a lot, so I hope I've done in properly.
Added anti-freeze to the sinks and toilet.

And, since I had the compressor out anyway, I topped the tires up to 41 lbs.

I'll report on the success of the venture next spring.

Glenn the other option would be to fill the lines with the alcohol of your choice and then in the spring have a "Trailer de-winterizing party"

Hi: All... Trouble with "the alcohol of your choice" is that it's 60% water. Now my 151 proof rum is only 25% water. That'll do it!!! Alf

Re: winterizing

I figure you just put the alcohol in and then suck it out right away. All the lines will be dry so there's nothing to freeze. Problem is, I only like beer.

Sounds very similar to one of my chores yesterday.
'ceptin' I never checked the tire pressure, but that would be a good idea before I take it to storage.

Re: winterizing

Storage? Oh shudder the thought!!! Glad I'm in VA, so we've got a little bit more time before winterizing. Next weekend is a 4 day weekend for me, and hoping to get out another time. Even after winterizing, I hope we can still go. Not as much snow down here as in the NORTH (all caps for you Canadian friends). Now's when it would be nice to be a Texan, 'cause they are just getting to the best camping of the year, not too hot!

How funny, I was just thinking that very thought. Although we had our fair share of full on winter camping on our way back from Chilliwack including 1 week where we had to winterize on the road due to the single digit F temps. We didn't/couldn't use any of the plumbing that week.

That said, right now in the central tx it's sunny with lows in the 40's & highs in the lower 70's. No putting Grasshopper in storage or winterizing for the season for us. Come on down & join us... We plan to head out again next weekend & likely the next couple of weekends after that!

Re: winterizing

Once I get to retire, you can be sure the trailer will see very little winterizing and stowage for the season.

Re: winterizing

I was just reading on the Goodyear site that if you do not put your trailer on blocks while in storage, that they recommend increasing your air pressure above the normal load rated pressure, by 25% while in storage. They also said (of course)to be careful to not exceed the pressure rating of your wheels. Interesting, I had never heard that one before. Here is a link to the document - quite a useful one I think: http://www.goodyear.com/rv/pdf/rvbrochure.pdf

That does make some sense, Eric. I hadn't heard it before either.

Re: winterizing

How many of you put your Escapes up on blocks/stands for the winter? I do, but it is a PIA and I'd rather spend the time doing other things. Would a result be longer tire life? That's what I have thought, but maybe it's bogus...

Re: winterizing

Park your trailer on plywood when parked on gravel or concrete your tires will last longer. The wood is an insulator.

Re: winterizing

Hi: Eddys...Ian& Jenny I tried to put our 5.0 on jackstands once but it wouldn't work with the axle lift. I have always made sure the tires are at max. psi. for storage, and not sitting on the ground but on some wood planks.
I slid under the trailer while winterizing it so while down there noted the date code of the tires (1407) and checked for any uneven wear...so far so good!!!
Hope you had a great camping season and were not too busy at the Forge.
We still marvel at our chance meeting this past spring. What a good time we had!!! Alf

Chance? I'd use the word - ordained! What's the chances of a 3 couples from Ontario, Vermont and Virginia would meet up in little Blacksburg at Red Robin It was a lovely time.
Ian, I've never jacked a trailer yet, but the wood under the tires (covered to protect from the sun), and full air pressure makes a lot of sense. Read somewhere about flat spots on the axle?? Seems pretty far fetched to me, but....seems if you jacked it up off the tires, you'd just develop a flat spot on the other side of the axle (I know, less weight)...but still, the chances??).
Hokie is still in business for camping. We won't winterize into November probably. Yeah for Southern living : - )
