We use a bathmat primarily because we don't wear shoes inside and the floor is cold, but also helps keep the floor clean.

The pad and carpet thickness is not a problem except you may need to raise the fire extinguisher mout next to the door. I didn't have to but it was a tight fit to get the fire extinguisher to fit it...

Thanks for the nice words. I suggest adding a carpet pad, it really makes the floor warm. We don't wear shoes inside so the warm, soft floor is nice.
