I don't cover it when not in use, but I suppose one could easily fashion a small rubber bolt cap to top it if you wanted to.

I just use a quick connect from Home Depot. Costs about $5 and you only put the trailer side on one-time. At the campground hose just Quick connects to the trailers-no leaks so far in several years.
