Hi, and welcome.

This is what I would do too. What I think would look great there is an old fashioned looking clock that matches the weather instruments.

That looks fine, though I agree on raising it up to door height.

Glen, I'm thinking horizontal myself after seeing this pic, though both are fine. What about horizontal but brought down to near the bottom of the cabinet?

Glen, like Doug mentions, you could use a hole saw freehand if you wanted to do the drilling in place.

I too would put them in a separate board though.
