2015 - 2018 F150 2.7 Ecoboost

Still looking for a tow rig for our on order 5.0 TA.
Want a Tundra but the poor mileage is making me look at the F150 with either the 2.7L Ecoboost or the 3.6 Ecoboost engines.

Will the 2.7 handle the 5.0 TA ok or will it struggle?

I know the next step is to make sure it has the load max/tow max package for enough payload.

Seems to be more 2.7 Liter ecoboost trucks on the market

Either EcoBoost will tow it fine. I went with the 3.5L in order to get a 6.5' box and Super Crew cab.

You can read all about the different EcoBoost engines and how they have developed over the years on Wikipedia. Even though I owned a first gen ecoboost f150 I would not go out and buy a used one. It is best to purchase a 2017 up because of the engine up grades not mention the aluminum body and 10 speed transmission.

Here are a few of the engine upgrades as stated in Wikipedia:

The most prominent change is the addition of port fuel injection, while keeping the direct injectors. It will prevent buildup on the intake valves and keep them clean due to fuel passing over the valves. Under certain engine conditions such as low rpm and low loads the high-pressure fuel pump and direct injection system will turn off and the engine will only use the port fuel injection, reducing efficiency losses due to the HPFP. Both systems will operate at cold start, which will reduce emissions that direct injection suffers to due to cold cylinder walls and lower fuel atomization.

The cam drive system changed from a single primary chain to a stronger two primary chain system with separate chains driving each cylinder bank. In addition to dual primary chains, the side plates on the chains were also thickened. The cam chain drive sprocket on the crankshaft is a double gear arrangement to drive the two primary chains. These two changes were done to improve the harmonics, and are also stronger to help minimize the chain stretch that occurs over time on the 1st generation 3.5L EcoBoost.

The camshaft VCT (phaser) design was also changed to improve reliability and reduce the development of a tapping noise over time.

Ford kept a single piston oil squirter per cylinder, but the oil volume was increased. The underside of the pistons were also redesigned to better transfer heat into oil from the new oil squirters.

Applications
375 hp (280 kW) at 5000 rpm, 470 lb⋅ft (637 N⋅m) at 2250-3500 rpm
2017– Ford F-150

My 2015 is an aluminum body. They did change the transmission the next year, though mine works great after 5 years and 100,00km, with over 1/3 of the kilometers towing.

Ours is a 2015 2.7EB with over 1/3 towing like Jim, it's now our only vehicle. Handles the 5.0TA just fine. Have 116,000km on it now (only about 900 in the last two months plus (something to do with not being able to go anywhere except to buy groceries).

We have a 2018 F150 EB 2.7 towing a 5.0TA (10 speed transmission). The engine /transmission combination is very impressive. We are completely satisfied with the performance and fuel economy. However, we have a 5.5 bed and strongly recommend the 6.5 bed.
