probably depends on how long a 'stinger' you use. I can just open the tailgate on my F250 superduty with a medium-long Curt 45260 stinger thats 12.25" from hole center to hole center... I couldn't with a shorter one.

I have used the Jack E Up with great success to eliminate clearance issues. Going to a longer stinger can cause detrimental issues to your towing experience.

a 12" stinger on a vehicle like the F150 derived Expedition, or my F250, with a sub 5000 lb fiberglass trailer isnt' gonna make any difference. ok, if I was pulling a E21 with a Expedition, I'd probably be using a WDH

Hi Woody,

Our 2017 Ford Expedition rear door/lift gate opens with plenty of room with the side winder Jack of our 21'. We use the Anderson WDH system and the distance from the center of the pin hole we use on the shank to the center of the hitch ball is 10 1/2". Hope this helps! - The Bea Team.

Plenty of room with Pro Series on 2019 Expy. Sue to independent rear suspension am using WDH bars more frequently as there is more squat than previous with '13 Yukon, however the ride is way better- not to mention the torque!

The independent (versus beam axle) suspension makes no difference to how much the vehicle squats under load - that's just a matter of how stiff the springs are. Leaf springs are used to locate the axle as well as to support the vehicle, so they can't be too soft (or the axle wobbles around. In any suspension with proper arms locating the suspension, the manufacturer can choose to make the springs softer (for better ride and traction), and they often do.

In this case, even the Yukon had control arms and coil springs (not leaf springs), so could have been softer if GM wanted.

If anyone with coil springs finds the springing too soft, they can add springs (air bags, polyurethane blocks, whatever) or change the coils out for stiffer ones (if they can find a suitable replacement spring). With air suspension it should self-adjust for no squat.

Yeah, that's right- my Expedition rides better due to independent rear suspension as well as softer springs. The Yukon didnt have any noticeable squat; the rear has very stiff suspension. The 2021 Yukon & Tahoes are reportedly going with independent rear suspension- probably due to the 4th Gen Expedition being so much more appealing for ride and lower floor in rear cargo area.

Yes, although the GM big SUVs have sold in much greater numbers than the Ford, the Expedition's IRS has been its advantage since 2003. The Expedition IRS design changed for the third generation in 2007. The new GM IRS is a different design from any generation of Expedition, but should work as well (there are a lot of good ways to do independent suspension). The Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada / Infiniti QX80 are also large body-on-frame SUVs with IRS.

Here's a reasonably comprehensive article about the new GM SUVs, including an illustration of the suspension. Air suspension is available - as it is with the Expedition and most comparable vehicles - to avoid squat issues.
