Ecoboost longevity

What a coincidence-- I logged in to post a query about that truck and engine. For those of you who have had a Ford with an Ecoboost for several years, how it is holding up? Is it a good high-mileage engine?

Salesman told me it has 11 computers onboard. Scary thought.

Mike I bought the f150 Ecoboost the first year it came out and sold it after 5 years as the trade in value was fantastic. At that time the dealerships here in Canada were shipping the used trucks to the US and getting top dollar. I am usually a ten or so year kinda guy.

I purchased a new aluminum bodied, 10 speed transmission, improved Ecoboost engine model to replace it.

Because we liked the Ecoboost engine so much we purchased a Ford Explorer Sport the first year they offered the engine. We kept that vehicle for 7 years and with all of our Ecoboosts have had no problem.

If something happened to my truck I would order another new one without hesitation. Nothing can come close to the available pulling torque for the price. I would not purchase a used one because the resale value it to close to new and just not worth the risk of anther persons foot. Do not by an early model used Ecoboost as a few years ago they did an important upgrade to the engine to help in longevity.

I would not purchase an Explorer as they are have quality control/ production line problems.

I towed with an F150 Ecoboost for several years, and I absolutely loved how it towed and I never had any major mechanical issues...but yes, I did have one of the main computers go out at around 40k miles. That cost $1500 and was a huge headache. I say...get an extended warranty!

So am I. Good info, thanks.

I hope to get ten years / 300,000 miles on my Tacoma. It's seven years old now, so in three years I plan to buy something else. Currently thinking of a full-size truck for towing and keeping the Taco as a daily driver. Keep the one I'm not using in the garage.

I've never been one for extended warrantees. Can you get the extended warranty for $1500? Are they $0 deductible?

My 2015 3.5 EcoBoost has 85,000 problemless miles. I bought it used 2 years ago with 51,000 miles. Most of the 34,000 miles we have put on have been towing.

2015 F150 / 2 Wheel Drive / 3.5 EcoBoost / 3.55 Axle / 6 speed transmission / Towing a 2019 5.0 TA

I try driving 62 - 63 MPH (probably spend 50% of mileage at this speed). I drive in the 70's if we want to make time or when traffic is heavy. I don't like traffic building behind me or needing to slow down when wanting to get by me so I keep up with the traffic when on busy roads.

Sept/Oct 2019 trip*13 tank average 13.876 actual*- computer said 14.725
Sept/Oct 2020 trip*9 tank average 14.393 actual*- didn't do the computer

I just bought one for my new Silverado that is 84 months, 125k miles and $0 deductible. It was about $1900. Yes a bit more than that particular fix, but everything else is also covered for a long time. It's a personal preference of course, but I like the security in having it...

Congrats! My buddy loves his 2020 F150 XLT 4-Door 4x4 6.5 foot bed that he bought a the end of October.

He says it pulls his 4700 lb dry camper like a breeze.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Good luck on getting that 23 footer, sounds like you'll have a nice ride to pull it with.

Mike,

My 2015 EcoBoost went south in its 4th year. I have me fits for four plus months in and out of shop before I finally kicked it to the curb. Electronics damaged by EMP from nearby lightning strike. Living in Florida I’m sure you can understand. But it would have fried anything computerized with four wheels, regardless of what emblem it had. The only redeeming thing was that although I didn’t want to spend the money for a new truck, I have a great dealership. The owner and sales manager felt that I had “suffered” enough, so they did not make a cent on my replacement F-150, I paid factory invoice. But I had 60K on my 2012 EcoBoost and 55K on my 2015 before the Benjamin Franklin kite-like experiment and had no engine problems with either. The 2012 was a 3.5 L, the 2015 was a 2.7 L. My 2020 is a 3.5 L because I found I greatly prefer the overwhelming power the 3.5 L provides. Hard to say about longevity, however. I had a Tacoma that needed a head gasket at 77K miles, and a Celica that went 250K with absolutely no breakdowns in 11 years. My spouse had a Dodge Omni that was reliable for 50 mile increments. What a POS.....
