Anderson No Sway for 21C

Anderson No sway hitch.
Thinking about switching to this type on the new 21’C. My 31’ Airstream has the bar and brake.
If you have used or presently using this type ( Anderson no sway) I would appreciate your comments. If you have not personally used used this hitch please refrain from comments. I have pull my Airstream for the last 25 years and am quite familiar with its existing system.
Just thinking about a lighter system.
No trying to be a butt, just don’t need the why change, or a have one on my 5th wheel.

Thank y’all.

Bought one from Escape when we picked up our new 21 in 2014. It was always a bit of a PITA compared to the Pro Series we had with our 17B. Had to be square to the trailer or it was just a lot of work to hitch back up unless at the same angle. Otherwise would have to go through a step to get the plate square by making some sharp turns in the opposite direction. Noticed our chain guides fairly quickly started being eaten away and it didn't seem there was an installation problem. Then our coupler yoke began coming up even with the lock pin in place. After researching this on Airforums I believe that the extreme force on the back of the ball creates premature wear inside the coupler.

Andersen refunded my purchase price in full just before the two year old mark. To me Escape trailers don't really need any sway control- especially the 21C with the bed up front with gobs of storage underneath. While the hitch got a bit of a redesign, it seems the only meaningful difference is a cap to keep the cone
material from being pushed up. The shape of the triangle plate looks a little better, yet it still has the basic design with those nylon bushings I would have to mess with from time to time. The Pro Series takes me 2 minutes tops per side.

I had the Andersen NO SWAY Weight Distribution Hitch 4" drop/rise 2" Ball # 3324 purchased in 2015. I used it for two years with the annoyance of occasional struggles getting it lined up and removed. Not having an electric jack compounded the annoyance. The ball was the newer model as I believe they had upgraded it a year before my purchase. Everything worked well and I did not have any mechanical issues with the hitch. It was just hard to use.

After two years of of use I tried it without a WDH and found I liked it much better. I did not miss the "trailer and tow feel like one" that some users mention. I sold it.

However, the Andersen kept on giving. For several years I suffered with clunking coming from the ball and yoke. I just recently read of the issues with premature wear on the yoke and I replaced the RAM yoke with a Bulldog last week. It cured the clunk.

About 7 years ago I bought an Andersen No-Sway and used it to tow a 17' SOB (some other brand) trailer about 9,000 miles IIRC. It performed well, smoothed out the ride (which pleased my wife), and didn't seem as bothersome to hook up as an Equal-i-zer brand hitch I've owned previously. I would have kept the Andersen when I sold the trailer, but the buyer wanted it so I gave him a decent deal on it. If I once again needed a WD hitch with sway control, there's a reasonable likelihood I'd buy another; it seemed good. For longer term use I'd want a Bulldog coupler, though.

Despite the issue of lining up your TV at hookup to the same angle as when you unhitched, I would get another Andersen WDH. It seems to let our trailer track the TV more freely and it does make a difference to the ride. Much less porpoising and less sway. I feel the difference when I tow without it. It depends on your TV and even the TV’s tires. Another reason I like it is that it is so much lighter.

A friend decided on the Andersen for his Lance before we got to know him and really likes it in comparison to previous hitches.

YMMV

I can say my Pro Series WDH has prevented sway and porpoising as well. It does. And it costs a lot less than Andersen and others.

I expect that all of the WDH options do pretty much the same.

I could do with a lighter WDH, but the Pro Series is easy to use. I've learned it is best to have the trailer and tow level and in line to install and remove. I figure that's the case with any tool.

We had an Andersen hitch for our 5,700# Cougar. I had lots of conversations with Andersen and was never satisfied with the hitch. You had to be backed in perfectly or else had to reset your elastomers. They replaced the hitch once because the cone failed, and finally at the end we had a sway situation. After only two seasons it was sold with the Cougar.

Enjoy,

Perry
