Anyone towing a classic 5.0 with a Tacoma, short bed

Hi folks,

I am a newbie, trying to research if my Tacoma, 4x4, 6 cylinder, short bed, will be able to tow a classic 5.0 adequately.

My truck is the basic factory issue extended cab 4 door. (not TRD or SR5) I have an aftermarket tow package, (7 prong plug, tranny cooler, bumper hitch - all by haul), factory shocks and suspension.

Anyone able to tell me if I'd need upgrades or can I tow with this set up? If so, what hitches are you all using?

Thanks so much,

Kit

What year is your Tacoma you may wish to look at this The Tacoma Towing Bible - Tacoma World Forums I have a 2011 4x4 Dbl Cab I am towing a 19 footer with. I have had the extra leaf put in by Toyota on the recall and use an Anderson weight distribution hitch , I did also add firestone ride rite air bags as the suspension still felt a little soft. It tows like a dream though mileage not great it is not horrible. With our beds being composite check on a mount system mountable in a composite bed.

Thank you Cypherian. I have a 2009 Tacoma.

I will check out the "Towing Bible"!

If you found a Classic for sale at a price you like, snag it! Tugs can be purchased nearly everywhere, if yours doesn't work out. The Classic 5er are few and far between.

Best of luck Kit. And Welcome to the EscapeForum too!

Does the Tacoma have a steel bed or a composite bed? Not sure if it makes a difference with a 5th wheel hitch but it did with the old Scamp 5er hitch.

We are using the B&W Patriot hitch on our Frontier 5' bed.

The current Tacoma - like some GM pickups - has a composite cargo box. This does not matter to fifth-wheel hitch mounting because the hitch is supposed to be supported by brackets attached to the frame (under the box), not just by the box. The original hitch sold by Scamp for their 19' model (but not their current hitch) was a crude frame that just bolted to the box - this would be a problem for some boxes, but is not an issue for a proper fifth-wheel for an Escspe 5.0.
