brake controller device

My towing vehicle is a 2011Toyota Tacoma V6 4wd. My Escape 19 is being delivered early Feb 2022. The Tacoma has a brake controller that I am assuming came when the truck was built. In have never used the brake controller. Can I reasonably assume that the orginal will do the job with the electronic brakes on the Escape? What situations would dictate getting a different brake controller?
Thank you all.

Controllers for electric trailer brakes are essentially universal, so whatever is in the truck will likely work without compatibility issues. But I don't think a 2012 Tacoma would have had a factory-installed (or dealer-installed Toyota accessory) trailer brake controller (although it is available in a Tundra); a previous owner likely installed an aftermarket controller, or had one installed. Is there a brand name and model on it? Does it look built into the dash?

I have never seen a Tacoma with a factory brake controller. Pictures please.

The factory ones aren't that great. I have a Tundra with a factory controller. It has been good for me but many on the Tundra forums removed them and went after market. There is a mounting bracket for my Tundra where you can put the Prodigy P3 in the dash. It's is the highest rated brake controller last I looked.
