Go mid-week and you could do MDO first, then Plaskett Creek, then Pfeiffer, then Veterans Memorial in Monterey. Epic!

I too have stayed at Pfeiffer SP and towed south from their with a trailer bigger than our current Escape. No problem from my point of view. Just take your time, as anyone should with such beauty so see.

Now, my wife who does not like heights or sheer drop offs and was sitting on the ocean side of the truck may give you a different opinion.

Ca 1

We drove CA 1 south with a 4Runner towing an Escape 19 through Big Sur in October 2018. No problems towing. Beautiful.

Pfeiffer Big Sur state park campground was full, so we stayed at the private Big Sur Camp, then at Morro Bay state park. McWay falls and Partington cove were short worthwhile walks. Lots of pull-offs.

<edited to correct state park campground name>

Don't want to nitpick yet to save others time seeking reservations, Julia Pfeiffer Burns is a Day Use area. Pfieffer Big Sur SP is the CG.

there actually used to be a couple 'primitive campsites' at Julia Pfeiffer Burns, meant for hikers and bicycle tourists, but I think the access to that whole area was closed off, as they were on the ocean side of 1 and directly above the waterfall.,,, oh wow, they still exist, https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29886 but they are reservation only, book 6 months in advance, and cost $30/night, yeeesh.

the Pfeiffers *are* related, Julia Pfeiffer Burns was the daughter of the Pfeiffer family that homesteaded Big Sur 100+ years ago when the only access was by horseback and it was a week or so ride from Carmel. Julia died in 1928. Highway 1 wasn't completed until 1939

Travel north instead of south unless you don't mind hanging on the side of cliff

If you are going up further, I would strongly recommend
Bullard's Beach State Park outside of Bandon. The FGRV group has had gatherings there for quite some time. It is very clean, many full hook-ups, and lots of things to see and do nearby...

We prefer to travel from north to south because that way all the pull outs are on the right hand side and makes it easy to stop and go towing a trailer. If you start early enough most of those lots will be empty... We took this part of 1 several time with the 19 and haven't have problem.. just start earlier to maximize the chance of stopping at every scenic stop, especially on the weekends during mid-days the road near each state park will be filled with cars and people....

Just be aware that the speed limits on I-5 is 55 for vehicles towing trailers.

I generally stay in the right lane on I5 and follow the semis, which are typically going 63-65 in the open stretches of I5, say, north of I80 up to Redding (which is usually as far north as I am going).

I have done Hwy.1 a number of times, including a 42' diesel pusher towing a GMC Yukon XL pushing 60 feet LOA. Not a problem. I would recommend stopping and "smelling the salt air". This is a spetacular trip, if you take the time.
