can dodge ram 1500 tow a 5.0?

5.0 newbies researching a tow vehicle. Thinking of a dodge ram 1500 and wondering if we need to go up to a 2500.
Any experience with dodge ram and 5.0 out there? advice appreciated

Simple answer, YES. Biggest question is the truck’s payload on the pillar behind the driver’s door. Pin weight of a loaded 5.0TA will be around 750 lbs. Add passenger weight and whatever else you want to carry.

Yes - we love towing our 5.0 with our 2019 Ram 1500. The 5.7 hemi has more than enough torque and power for any towing situation. You need to pay attention to the payload - trucks that are really loaded up with a lot of options will have a lower payload so there can be a wide range. Take a look at the payload sticker on the door frame at different trucks on a dealers lot and you'll get an idea for how the options impact the payload. You need enough payload capacity to handle the pin weight of 750 pounds or so, plus weight of the hitch, passengers, and any cargo you carry in the truck.

Been towing 4 Escapes with my 2014 Ram Hemi, great towing machine, plenty of power when needed.

Towing a 5.0 with The RAM 1500 is doable, again its the truck load capacity listed on door that may be the issue. Already have 36000 miles on just the camper with our Ram ecodiesel. Only real challenge, most memorable, was going east on the Teton pass Hwy at 10% grade at 7k to 8k ft elevation it still held to the speed limit. Going down was scarier than going up. First n second gear and still tapping the brakes.

Dodge Ram classic 1500 gas 5.7hemi towing fifth wheel

Hello again

Thanks for all the advice on the hitch weight.

As we are in the buying stage on the truck, I thought I better be specific as I know diesels have more power and we are buying a gas model. We are looking at a dodge ram 2021 classic crew cab gas 5.7 hemi engine with MDS with 3.92 axle.
does this have enough power to tow a 5.0? We are looking at truck for the long run so if it will be taxing on the truck we are willing to move up to the 2500 but the price difference is quite quite quite significant. Thanks again!

The 5.7 hemi has more than enough power to pull the 5.0 pretty much anywhere. We have the 3.21 rear axle and it tows easily on mountain grades at altitude. I debated getting the 3.92 when we ordered our truck, but with 8 speed transmissions now days unless you are pulling something much heavier the 3.21 does just fine, and is a little better on gas when you're not towing. The 5.0 is well below the towing weight capacity of a Ram 1500 hemi with either rear axle. After towing for years with a much older truck with less power, it's a joy with the new truck to be able to accelerate when I need to even going uphill at 8.000 feet. And with modern electronic transmissions going downhill in the mountains is effortless, in tow/haul mode it will automatically downshift as needed to maintain any speed you like without having to manually shift or ride the brakes.

Hi: tedtucci... Our 3L EcoDiesel w/3:55 axle does just fine. Our Ram is so loaded with "Bells and Whistles" there's hardly room for us but at my age I'm quite past the speed curve. Alf

I too have the 3:21 rear end and I'm very pleased with the performance....
