I’ve prepared a chart that compares small diesel tow vehicles against equivalent gas vehicles. I didn’t include the larger diesels in the ¾ ton series trucks because they are overkill for Escape trailers. For fuel costs I used Vancouver prices which are probably the highest in North America. No matter your fuel cost, the ratios are still applicable. I added a maintenance cost for diesel to the overall cost because fleet managers say they cost more. The maintenance number is kind of arbitrary but does reflect a little bit of research. I think the cost/ft lbs of torque is useful. High torque + low cost = fun towing. The Ram diesel makes very little difference in the Ram pickup but sure looks good in the Cherokee. The Canyon diesel looks positively stunning though I have no idea how reliable it is. It’s got the lowest overall cost, the best cost/torque, and the same torque to weight ratio that the big boys have.

When I looked at your chart I wondered why you jumped up to the Overland trim for the Grand Cherokee. So then I went to the Canadian Jeep site and found out that it's not available on a lower trim. Kinda weird that in the US we can get it in a Limited which is about $5k (USD) less.

Screwup Alert I've got the wrong Ram mileage numbers down. Here's the corrected data

The Ram Diesel is looking pretty good now.

There's about 400 million less people here so we get less choice.

Dave's chart includes the three vehicles that we seriously considered before settling on the Canyon. In the end, the RAM lost out because I just can't stand the thought of driving around in something the size of today's full-size trucks, especially when it won't fit in my garage. Chose the truck over the SUV because for us, the extra space in the bed provides a lot of extra utility.

Thanks for doing that. I will try to remember to refer to it when I am ready for a new tow.

I have yet to tow my 19 (May 17) but I really love my Canyon Diesel. It's the perfect size, comfortable and ready and able to tow a trailer: complete tow package with exhaust brake, integrated trailer brake, lots of torque at low RPM. I had to add 8l of DEF at 11,700 k. I am looking forward to the drive to Chilliwack and back!

Oh yes! I pick it up on the May 23, then 2 hour training at Valley Driving School next door and then off to Osoyoos. There is only one way to learn how to tow in the Rockies and that is just do it! Taking my time of course and being careful.
I have yet to work on my post-Osoyoos path east and that will start once I sign off the build in a couple of days. Quite the adventure...

I just read the 2018 GMC Terrain will offer a diesel option. I could not find anything on capacities or towing packages. This could be an interesting vehicle for 17 owners.

A lot of people must feel the same way. In February the Chevy / GM Colorado / Canyon model trucks outsold Toyota's whole lineup of truck models

You made me look, I got excited, then I saw the low (imho) numbers.

Hi! Of yes...any excuse to go out for a slow drive. I'd like to get some camping in near Long Sault. Friends tell me it is gorgeous as you are on little islands in the middle of the St. Lawrence. Only a couple of hours from Ottawa but may be busy because of celebrations here.

Stan,
What mirror did you get to fit the Canyon? I looked on the Clearview Mirrors web site, but did not see any GMC trucks supported.

And how did ordering from Australia work for you?

You may want to have a look at the Milenco selection.

Does GMC not offer an OEM towing mirror. I have them on both my Fords, and they are fantastic. Great rear view retracted or extended, and extremely stable too.
