So, what causes the biggest hit on gas mileage,
the weight or the wind resistance?

Wind resistance , according to everything I read. But the weight is also a factor in stop and go traffic, less with interstate driving.

The biggest hit on gas mileage is due to all of the idling that you do when you stop to pick up crap that has fallen off and tie it back on again.

I thought it might be the bumper and hitch dragging on the road.

When heading towards Dead horse/Canyonands from Moab we saw the remnants of a trailer on the shoulder in the opposite side of Hwy 191. Downhill- not more than 3-4 percent. Total destruction. You could see the skid marks where the TV went sharply into the #1 lane then snapped back. Very sobering to see.
