Octane rating makes very little difference to fuel economy, but higher can help by allowing for more optimal ignition timing.

Ethanol content does affect the volume of fuel consumed, simply because it contains less energy per unit volume... but 10% ethanol can only cause a few percent consumption increase.

Accurate fuel economy testing is very difficult, due to the impossibility of matching driving conditions.

Mileage is not my reason for going to the higher octane. The truck just pulls harder. This is recommended in the manual. If the extra cost became an issue I’d happily stick with the regular, which is what I use when not towing. Now if someone really wanted to see how much of a gain, a trip to the dyno or drag strip would do it 🤔 think I’ll just go with seat of my pants. I’d bet that it’s been done a time or 2 already on some of the forums.

I have never had a power issue using regular, even with trailers heavier than my 5.0TA.

Me neither, it just seems to pull even stronger and the engine seems to run a little smoother with the higher octane. Also remember you’re running the 3.5 which has even more power than my “little “ 2.7.😎

I buy most of my fuel when I’m in town at a Sinclair station where 87 octane unleaded
Is $.20 per gallon more than the 10% Ethanol 87. I run this in my Nissan, mowers etc. if I’m going to pull the Escape I often too off the tank with the unleaded. There is a difference in the quality of gasoline I am convinced. But the biggest difference in mileage is headwind/ tailwind from my experience. In the outboard I like 91 octane if I can get it.
