Ford Ranger
Here's a poorly-edited article from CNN on the new Ford Ranger pickup:
Ford Ranger is back - Jan. 14, 2018

Looks and sounds like GM will now have some real competition in the mid size truck market. Now there will be two good choices for those who do not wish to drive a full size truck.
GOOD NEWS !!

Here's a better write up, and more photos from Car and Driver. Interesting that the only powerplant regardless of trim or drivetrain will be the 2.3L EcoBoost I4. 10 speed transmission too.

I think they've lost me as a hard core waiting for new Ranger person. No diesel and the 4 cylinder engine engine leave me cold.
When the time comes I might actually, gasp, consider the F150.

From those who have them, how well do these eight- and ten-speed transmissions work when towing a trailer? Do they behave differently from the older three- and four-speed transmissions?

YES , The 8 speed transmission works differently then the old 3 ,4 , 5 speed transmissions. My 8 speed ZF transmission works well when towing.
** Disclaimer **
I own a 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi V8 with the ZF 8 speed automatic transmission. I do "NOT" own a 2018 Ford Ranger with the 10 speed transmission.

Both myself and my brother in law had new F150 s with the 3.5 ecoboost and 10 speed trans on our trip across country last fall. I like that it had a very fine choice of gears when selecting one so that It was not forced down to low and had to rev the engine higher than need be. I was towing about 4,500 lbs and my brother in law was about 7,000 lbs. He was always one gear below what I was towing at. Even when towing you use the full range. It works good.
I love my eco boost and would not order a truck without it. As for the transmission...it is ok but is no where near the excitement or change the engine made.
I will be seeing what the new Bronco has to offer 5 years down the road.

Can't say anything about a 10-speed, but an 8-speed ZF works great if the transmission programming is done well. It will spend most of its time in 7th. 7th and 8th are overdrives.
BTW, I like 6 speeds in cars, but in a GAS truck or SUV it's not enough gears to avoid those lurching shifts when towing. I haven't been particularly pleased with the 6-speed in our 2017 Honda Pilot towing our 17B or with the 6-speed that was in our 2012 F360 6.2 carrying a truck camper. However, the 6-speed in my
Colorado is spot-on and a good match for the diesel power plant.
The 4-speed in my 2003 GMC with a 306hp V8 was terrible. I'm glad those days are over!
I've never driven a 3-speed. I don't think one has been made since the 2002 Toyota Corolla.
Everything is going to 8+ speeds to allow more overdrive gears with the ability to keep RPM's low for fuel efficiency.

I'm guessing 280 hp and 310 ft/lb of torque in the Ranger 2.3 which should be a great match for the vehicle, but I'm sure a lot of people are saying the same thing. Ford will be more than happy to sell you an F150, but if you want mid-sized truck with diesel you will have to go to GM.

Others are guessing a bit higher. The Car and Driver folks speculate it'll come in around 300hp and 350 lb/ft of torque.
Engine wise, I think the 2.7L EcoBoost like the one in my F150 would be amazing in the Ranger.

Mike, I had a 2009 Ram with a 5 sp auto, 5.7 v-8 and 3:55 gears in rear, I avg 12 mpg towing or not. I have a 2014 Ram, 8 sp auto, same motor, 3:21 rear and avg 15 towing and 18 not towing. The rear end and the 8 speed transmission both contribute to the increase in efficiency.

Although many potential buyers would like a roughly 3-litre V6 EcoBoost, Ford probably wants to keep the Ranger distinct from the F-150; cutting into F-150 sales is a concern which delayed the return of the Ranger.
While the 2.3 EcoBoost is the only engine initially, if Ford is still interested in diesels (they are apparently going ahead with the F-150 diesel), then the same 3.2 L Powerstroke 5-cylinder found in the Transit would be an easy choice (and distinct from the F-150 diesel). It's hard to imagine continuing to sell a pickup truck in North America with no engine choice.

I got halfway through reading the page and then I was redirected to a bogus page saying I was needing to download a program to stop passwords being stolen on my computer. I shutdown the computer and then restarted and scanned for malware and viruses and my computer came up clean. I'm running Chrome.
