Gas mileage as trailer size increases

For those who have traded up to a bigger trailer but kept the same tow vehicle- what did your gas mileage do?

I'm curious not because I want to trade up but because I've seen some pretty low figures with some larger vehicles and wonder if that is trailer weight or just lower efficiency.

I went from 14MPG towing an Escape 17B weighing 3100 lbs to 11-12MPG towing a 4600 lb 21. This is with a 2016 Tacoma Off Road.

Gas mileage down about 10% from a 19 to
a 21. Comfort up about 20% on the floor space. As my old friend Boge Johnson the flag man at the Knoxville Iowa Speedway used to say “ It costs money to go racin’.”
Slow down a few miles an hour and you can get a lot of the drop back. “ You ain’t goin to a fire are you?” Dad

Each step-up in length for the trailers above also involves a bigger cross-section of trailer front end, meaning more wind resistance.

We got around 14 MPG’s towing our 16 ft Scamp
On our last trip we got a little over 12.5 ( Maybe closer to13) MPG’s towing our 17 ft trailer
On a 5000 mile trip the difference in fuel costs would be well under $100 between (calculated ) the two trailers.
The question I always ask my self is “ Would I stay home and avoid seeing the USA and Canada just to save $50 or $75 ? “ The answer is always no.
Buying a travel trailer and then being overly concerned about fuel mileage never made sense to me but then I never claimed to be too bright !

I'm really wondering what kind of gas mileage I'll get with current trailer and upgrade tow vehicle. I get 18-19 now (whih is interestingly about the same as with the Campster, which was lighter but less aerodynamic and probably I slowed down a bit). So if I go to something like a Highlander ( or more likely Subaru Ascent) will I stay the same (more power, same trailer) or go down (bigger, slightly less efficient vehicle)?

Averaged 12-13 mpg with my ‘08 Toyota Sequoia 5.7 pulling a 17’ Casita
Averaged the same 12-13 mpg towing a 19’ Escape
In June should find out if the mpg changes when we get our 21’ Escape
