Hitch Lock

Just picked my '22 21C after a 15 month wait. Very excited to have it finally in my driveway. What kind of eheavy duty locks are being used by Escape owners for their rigs? I tried the Proven Industries lock, and it doesn't fit - the outside collar is too narrow to slide on to the coupler. Any thoughts?

Congratulations on your new trailer; and condolences on the no-fit coupler lock.
I have such an animal on the coupler of my 2020 19' and find it hard to believe our couplers are so radically different.

In any event, Proven Industries should have some explanation and/or alternatives for you to consider.

We have a Proven industries lock. The first one we got did not fit, so I called customer service and they sent us the right one that fits perfectly! Give them a call.

I have a September 2021 E19. I bought the Proven Industries without the puck lock and supplied my own suggested by ‘The Lock Picking Lawyer.”. The model I purchased and fit was Model 2178-A × 1. ETI told me the coupler they were using at the time was made by Barber Equipment. Almost certainly sourced from China.

It’s a Mul t Lock that has gone up in price since I bought it.

That may or may not help you given that ETI probably sources what they can to keep production moving.

The correct one for ours was the 2178-A. It is $235 on their website today, and worth every penny.

Wherever we go, I always keep at least one eye on the trailer. Guess I'll be taking my chances.

Geez! For about 400 bucks with a better puck there has to be a better solution.

Proven will discount the lock if you buy it without the puck, and yes, that Amazon price on the lock is pretty steep mow. I don’t remember my total, but it was well under $300. However, that was 10 months ago now.

I paid less than $10 for this lock and it has proven effective for more than ten years.

Any thoughts on CEN4 rated padlocks?

I too have used some cheap locks, and removed them in a couple of minutes when they seize. The trailer delivered was almost $39K, so I didn’t feel $250-$275 was out of line. Any lock can be defeated, but some are harder than others. I’ve had little taken, but also sleep better when I do the best I can. It’s sad we need locks, but it’s been a problem for thousands of years.

My point is that many times we get advice, like using dryer sheets to keep mice away, where the evidence is that no mice were seen.

In my case, it appears the lock works when it probably does nothing. Or maybe it keeps mice away.

The other thing to keep in mind are the safety chains, which can also be used to tow a trailer away even if the hitch is locked, unless you choose a lock which will secure the chains.

Since every effort can be defeated under the right circumstances, the more barriers you employ the better off you are. On our trailer I use a hitch lock, remove the crank handle from the jack, have detachable safety chains, and wrap a chain around the axle which I attach to the wheel with a puck lock. It takes less than 5 minutes for me to do this. Few things would ruin our vacation more than returning to find our trailer stolen.

A year ago I purchased the Proven 2178-A for a 2021 21NE. It fit. At that time, the Braber web page for the coupler Escape was using had an incorrect picture of the coupler. I brought it to Braber's attention and it appears they have corrected it.



Proven was having a high exchange/return rate on the lock at that time and requested pictures of the coupler before shipping the lock to me.


At the time I was ordering, I felt that the wrong picture on Braber's web page was contributing to people ordering the incorrect lock model from Proven.

The Proven Industries lock I first purchased didn't fit either, but I contacted the company and they sent a different one (at no charge) that does fit. They have been great to deal with. After spending $40,000 on the trailer, $300 doesn't seem like too much for peace of mind.
