Hitch Lock that comes with new Escape

Does anyone know if the "hitch lock" that comes with my new Escape 21 is a coupler lock or a hitch lock? It comes with the "goodies package." Also, which one is it? Thanks, we pick up ours next week and I don't want to buy an extra lock.

I believe the hitch lock is the pin thru the locking handle on the hitch top, not a coupler lock that goes inside the coupler.

As the package says, it locks the latch of the coupler. "Hitch" usually refers to the vehicle side of the hitching system, so a hitch lock might be a locking pin to hold the ball mount in the receiver... it's not that.

I bought a locking pin for the coupler and the stinger from E Trailer several years ago. They are stainless steel and have not rusted. There are several sizes so before ordering, the pin/hole diameter and with must be measured. They will hold things together as intended while towing but wouldn’t take much to defeat while parked. They are cylinder key locks not combination. And they are not keyed alike but I think you can get them keyed alike.

I lost a ring of keys in April 1978, it was the last time I lost keys. Lost them in Cleveland, didn’t miss them till I drove 400 miles. My wife’s dad defeated the padlock on the moving truck with little blue wrench (aircraft head)
I have four sets for the camper. And have not had a problem. now where did I put my hat?

How does it go, "Locks keep honest people, honest" and are intended just to slow down dishonest people.

So, what brand would you consider buying in its place?

I bought this universal coupler lock today because my neighbor recommended it. He has one on his big utility trailer and claims it cannot be cut off. Of course I let him think I believe that. I liked the thing for my trailer because it uses the round cylinder type key and all I had to prevent theft is running my dinko WallyWorld Master lock through the jaw latch.

What price, base security? $48.66, for “The World’s Toughest Locks.” After I put the Trimax UMax500 innovative multi-use trailer coupler on my trailer, though, I began to wonder. How would a thief compromise the thing? Doubts emerged.

Why not use the grinder to cut down the coupler jaw latch if he couldn’t cut through the hardened chrome bar? It is relatively soft metal. Wouldn’t the UMax500 then easily slip off?

Package says, “AMS” – Absolute Maximum Security? I don’t think so. Hope I never find that out.

A news story some time ago just came to mind. You say, "it uses the round cylinder type key". I wonder if that's the same type that could be unlocked with a Bic pen in a few seconds.

Oh, yeah, that's just what I needed to hear, Geebags. By some time ago you must mean like when you were the night watchman at the brewery in the thirties and everyone was testing the locks there. Oh wait, was no prohibition in Canada.

Anyway, technology has made advances since back then. No Bic handy here -- I tried to pick it with this pointed non-Bic. Can't see how they might have done it. Anyway, like Fi-i-d-d-d--I mean--Josie, said, why take a chance? See pix #2.

Sorry, I can defeat all the locks with a DeWalt 20V grinder in seconds. Get good insurance and only leave your trailer somewhere secure.

From Today's Bike:
Using a Pen

One of the easiest ways to open a bike lock without a key is to use a pen.
Now, this pen trick will usually only work with tubular locks or select U-locks.
In order to do this, take a Bic pen, or a pen with a similar diameter, remove the tip of the pen, and then press the hollow pen tube into the keyway, press it in, and turn it in the unlocking direction.
With a cheaper lock, this will usually be enough to open it.
