Honda Ridgeline, 2nd Generation truck

I realize this was the subject of an earlier thread, but Honda sent me a $1500 coupon on the new Ridgeline and I may be interested. I love the 2 way tailgate, see here for more details............http://automobiles.honda.com/ridgeline/....seems like a perfect match for Prairie Schooner.

I used to drive a Honda Civic two-door (trunk, not a hatchback) and loved it. (Despite about six recalls in the six years I owned it!) I kept hoping they'd come out with a truck though this wasn't really what I had in mind at the time. Anyway, I like the looks of this. I may have to go see one. Cargo space in the back seat is an issue for me.

Also wondering about actual prices-

Here you go-The Ridgeline’s Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy rating of 18 m.p.g. in the city, 25 on the highway and 21 combined tops the efficiency of the competitors’ 4WD gasoline V6 models. The diesel Canyon and Colorado rate a best-in-class 23 m.p.g. in combined driving.

I finally found it, too. How did you get the coupon?

Have you driven one?

There don't seem to be a lot of them in stock yet so it may not be an option if I decide I need to move up soon. But I really like the idea of cargo space in the back and still enough passenger seating and better mpg than most trucks or large SUVS.

Yes- and how will that compare with actual prices of available trucks? Right now there do not seem to be a lot in stock and most were the loaded models.

The long-running second-generation Ridgeline thread: Honda Ridgeline Revival

I finally had a look at the new Ridgeline at a dealership last week, right beside a Pilot. I still like that tailgate, but having a closer look I noted a couple of interesting things about the cargo bed:
  • the bed floor is quite high, noticeable mostly as the wheel wells sticking up very little above it
  • one reason for the high bed floor is that the spare tire is over the axle (as it was before, and unlike the Pilot) but that spare is a space-saving compact size

The rear seat space seems to identical to the Pilot - and adult-sized - so the Ridgeline really is a Pilot with a big box instead of the smaller enclosed cargo area of the Pilot.
The hitch of the Ridgeline is not the same as that of the Pilot, and looks well-constructed.

There has been substantial discussion in other forums of the seam between the cab and the box side panel, which did not exist in the first generation. I wondered if the box is actually separate from the structure, but I'm thinking it's probably not (it's hard to see clearly without getting underneath, and the truck in the showroom had a tent mounted on it as well). On the other hand, some people have suggested that it is just a cosmetic moulding to make the vehicle look more like a typical pickup truck, but that's not true - it is a significant gap closed by a rubber moulding. I suspect that Honda found this area to be too stressed to be one continuous side panel without the "buttress" design of the first generation, so they are allowing the box sides to move slightly when the body twists so there is no panel damage.

When GM put out their box-denting toolbox and concrete blocks advertisement I wondered how the composite box of the Toyota Tacoma would handle this type of abuse. I still haven't seen a test of the Tacoma, but the Ridgeline's box is also composite material, and it has been tested with concrete blocks: Google search for Honda Ridgeline composite bed test. It looks like the Honda passes with the blocks; I would be interested to see the toolbox test as well.

I generally don't watch online videos (not worth trying on a mobile connection), but the associated article says that for the Ike climb the Ridgeline with a 4,800 pound trailer and at max GCW runs about the same time as a Tacoma with a 5,600 pound trailer, and substantially faster than a diesel Canyon with the 5,600 pound trailer (Tacoma and Canyon times from the regular Ike Gauntlet page). With its lighter trailer, the Ridgeline achieved significantly better fuel consumption than the Tacoma, and almost as good as the Canyon.

I would check on "TrueCar". At least it gives you a ballpark number.

Thanks, I'm getting $33,000 as I'd configure it, about the same as it comes up with their "Build and Price."

I'm finding between $500- $1000 less than MSRP with True Car, not much of any discount, but I'm sure there will be more before years end.

Truecar is giving me $2-$3 K over MSRP. Well, if this vehicle is on my list I'll wait for prices to come down. But I may test drive one soon to see if I want it on the list.

That is interesting as I'm getting a little discount and you are paying a premium? Seems odd?

Maybe fewer on the lots here or more demand, or they just start higher so they can bargain down? That was my impression when I first pulled up a few on dealer sites- that they were able to ask a premium due to low inventory.
