You don't need to wait. You could look at a used Jeep diesel now, and find lower prices than a new one...

I was under the impression that this was a completely reworked diesel engine in the Jeep, and got better ratings than their older ones, no?

Either way, I will keep the Pilot for a few years yet, it does the job fine. Come a time when I retire and want to carry a bit more weight is when I will be looking to upgrade.

The latest Jeep diesel is not reworked, it's completely unrelated to the previous one, but very similar in specification... but of course it's a few years later so I hope it's a bit more advanced. This isn't a deliberate upgrade: Chrysler got divorced from Daimler in the economic downturn, so they lost their access rights to Mercedes engines; now they're married to Fiat and the family engine supplier is again VM Motori (which was owned by Chrysler in the past and 50% owned by Fiat now). The engine supplier selection is all about business, not technology or performance.

We owned a 2007 Jeep GC Diesel and used it to tow a 3,800 lb boat. The torque was awesome for a mid-size SUV and had no problem on the steep hills towing this boat. We now own a 2012 V6 Highlander as the Jeep broke down twice and we lost confidence in it as we often take long trips and the last breakdown was in an isolated area and took a week to be repaired. This was our second Jeep GC and just found the reliability not what we wanted. While the Highlander won't tow like the Jeep GC we expect it to be more reliable.

New on this forum, thinking of selling the boat and purchasing an Escape 19 ft. Lots of great information on this site and welcoming owners prepared to share information.

We pull our 19 foot Escape with a 2008 Highlander without any problems. Our younger now also pulls the Escape with his 2012 Highlander, again without any problems. It's a nice combination.

My wife and I had the fortunate opportunity to see a 19 ft on the weekend from some very kind local owners. The trailer is even better than we imagined and just what we are looking for as far as size, comforts and quality. The boat is now listed for sale and looking through what options to consider.

Thank you for the feedback using the Highlander to tow, it is comforting to know our current vehicle will do the job.

That is great news for the upcoming larger 5th wheel. That engine has a bit more torque than the V8 Hemi, and way better fuel economy, and hordes more torque than the V6 option.

I am liking this, and can't wait to see what the competition does to keep up. Good news for consumers, in my mind.

Hi: Scuba55... Like a dream!!! Aver. 19.25 mpg's on our spring trip to Tenn& S.C. Can't say I fudged the figures as my wife did the math!!! The Frontier is finally broke in at 60,000km's/40,000mi. Alf

Looks like a great set up. I too have a Frontier, but its the short bed, the only known disadvantage. The 5.0 has always been my first choice, and I don't want to upgrade my truck if possible as I really like my 2011 Frontier. There is a couple with a Frontier (short bed) picking up there 5.0 later this month so I'm hoping they offer some insight into how well it tows.

Hi: Again... The easy solution is a pin extender. That will move the trailer nose away from the cab. The other is a slider style hitch that does the same thing, but must be activated on turns. A good hitch shop is a must!!! Alf
