Due to the compromise between tall enough gearing to allow desired top speed and short enough gearing to provide desired low-speed power, a very few EVs have two-speed transmissions, although only for the rear wheels in the cases that I am aware of: the various Rimacs and the Porsche Taycan (and presumably the Audi models related to that Porsche). The same logic could apply to an off-road capable EV; the lower ratio could be good for getting a heavy trailer moving.

Like much of North America it seems, it’s been very cold here the last few days so I thought I’d follow up with bit more of how my wife’s EV has performed…

We were out with it yesterday for quite a while and temperature during that time was between -20C and -23C (-4F to -9F) based on what the car showed. Range was now down about 40% compared to summertime. I was also curious about how much the battery depleted when just heating so I just sat in it and read for about 90 minutes. The Battery% readout dropped by 3% during that time, so between 2% and 3% per hour. I was just heating the driver’s side and running the heated seat on mid level.
