Massachusetts tolls.

Just received in the mail a citation from the Mass Turnpike for a unpaid toll of $3.90. the interesting part is they traced me with the trailer tag, not my truck tag. Now I know I paid all the tolls as I use the cash line up and back to New Brunswick, Canada 2 weeks ago.. Is it possible that someone did not push a button showing a toll was paid? They threaten non renewal of my registration but with 5 year tags on the trailer I'm not too concerned. But more curious as to why this happened?

Hi: cpaharley2008... You're a victim of Mass transit. Cash is so hard to trace so I always ask for a receipt. In NY. they toll extra for over height. We break the bar and have to pay extra for air space usage. Alf

Some parts of the Mass Pike do not have toll booths, instead have readers over the highway. If you do not have an EZ Pass, they take a picture of your license plate and mail you the bill.

This is correct, they are removing all the toll booths. Not a citation, just a bill if only 3.90. The last fine I had was $50.

The PA EZ-pass would work, saves about 50% over the mailed bill.

Do your best to stay off the Illinois Tollway System if you have a twin axle trailer. They charge you about $4.20 for your trailer/toll plaza. (How interesting that they call the site of a state sponsored highway robbery a "plaza") It doesn't matter that my tow vehicle weighs half a ton more than my trailer, they still charge 4X the cost of the tow vehicle alone.

Tolls

Tolls are a fact of life. I remember paying the $.10 to cross into Missouri 50 years ago when we made the high speed firecracker runs back in the day. I go through Chicago several times a year and just sigh and pay the freight. Then onto the Indiana tollway for a few miles, another toll. Then up into Michigan across the blue water bridge into Ontario, another $9.00. US or $12.00 CAN. I don't run the toll roads if I don't have to but when it makes good economic sense I take them. Grin and bear it as the old man used to say. Course I get them back with the Cosmo Kramer con taking Iowa nickel cans into Dime Michigan returns. Just kidding, ain't got time for that nonsense, got beer to drink.

The Garcon Point Bridge in Santa Rosa County, Florida has a toll of $3.75, which is already unsustainable for that local economy; hardly anyone uses the bridge. I took my trailer down to the local Camping World to have some work done, and the closest route involved crossing the bridge. I thought I'd pay .25 or .50 extra for each axle but noooo-- it was $3.75 for each additional axle, totaling $11.25! Needless to say I returned home via another route.

I don't mind tolls, to a point, if they are for a particular purpose such as to maintain a suspension bridge or other bridge that requires maintenance. But state legislatures tend to play shell games with funds like this and shuffle the money to fund other stuff, some of which is nonsense imho. You can't trust the government to do what it says it will do with your toll money.

You can't trust the government to do what it says it will do with any money it collects from you. Those running the government do whatever they please. It's not just highway or bridge tolls.

I was surprised how the tolls added up going from Ohio to Cape Hatteras on the Penn Turnpike. Almost $70 one way. On the return we took I70 through Wheeling cutting the toll down to about $20. Avoided the nasty construction on I76 through Akron.

For whom the road tolls!!!

Hi: All... Last time we used the 407/412 toll road thru Toronto it cost about $35. CDN to travel 90Km's/55Mi. Time of day travel applies too!!! That's one way only. Taxpayers own it but the Gubermint leased it to 407 ETR. Inc. They're the ding dongs that toll us. Alf

I think Hemminingway must have taken the 407/412 once. He later wrote "For whom the booth tolls, it tolls for Alf" or something like that. Tolls, can't pass by without them, gotta lose time to avoid them.

Don't you get a break in fees if you have an I-Pass? I thought it was half off.

Unfortunately once you add a trailer to your car the tolls are same whether you pay cash or use IPass or EZpass. No discounts for them not having to handle your cash.

As noted in an earlier thread, the toll bridges in the Vancouver area (Golden Ears and Port Mann) work like the newer Massachusetts system: you can get a transponder and pay the lowest toll via automated payment, register without transponder and pay a less-reduced toll via automatic payment, or not register and get a full-rate bill in the mail (which you pay online). It generally works fine.

One difference is that the Vancouver bridge system doesn't bill on trailer plates, expecting instead to use the front plate of the tow vehicle; those of us from places which don't use front plates get a free ride if towing.

Ontario's 407 is an early example of a toll road that has never had toll booths, and has always run on automated license plate identification. I've used it when the travel time and hassle savings was worthwhile, and skipped it other times. It's the only toll road (rather than bridge) that I've seen in Canada since the Coquihalla Highway toll ended.

I suppose it's possible that some toll roads may not be properly marked, so drivers get unexpected bills for using a route that they might not have chosen if they knew they were paying... but I don't think anyone who misses the signs for the Vancouver bridges or Ontario 407 should be operating a motor vehicle.

I dunno, Brian;
That would be a pretty big hit on the North American economy if that many people were suddenly off the highways and byways.
