New Tire Options for a 2004 17B

Hi Folks,

I have a 2004 17B and I'm looking for opinions on a replacement tire. I currently have Goodyear Marathon Radials. The tire size is ST205/75R14.

Thanks for your thoughts

Hi: TBAM... There's probably room for 225/75R14's but they will lift the trailer up higher. I went with the original size as the 5.0 has already been lifted.
Watch out for the last step. It'll be a doozie!!! Alf

True, but with only 20 mm of added section width and a 75 aspect ratio, the increase in sidewall height (and thus the increase in ride height) would be 75% of 20 mm, or 15mm (9/16") - that might not be significant.

Yes, you're right - the only question is whether or not you care since it is not much higher. We're not talking stilts here...

I've had 2 sets of Towmax tires, had to be replaced at roughly 10k miles, very narrow tread width. Would suggest they be avoided.

Currently have Maxxis M8008's, much wider tread. So far so good, in my 3rd year with them with about 10k on them. I have started blocking up the trailer for winter storage at my tire guys suggestion. These receive high marks in reviews, they also cost more. I had to have the tire shop order them special.

No personal experience but I've heard both ways on the Marathons, you can search the rv boards for folks comments on them. Most complaints look to come from folks with much heavier rigs then yours.

I'm about to replace my Marathons with Marathons.
I have followed the discussions on the web, and it appears to me that there was an issue with some Marathon tires some time ago.
A company like Goodyear cannot afford to ignore a problem and rectify it.
I wouldn't be replacing mine if not for the nagging on the net about tires aging.

My degree of care is NOT in question here. As I stated in my case I didn't want to add to my own height issue.

I thought the 14 referred to the inches in the diameter of the tire. If so, how would a 225 instead of a 205 lift the trailer? I believe I have the same tire and I was wondering about 15" replacements. (Just curious to know if it would raise the trailer an inch.)(Actually, I'm short and stay on mostly paved roads, so I don't need the raise.)

The 14" dimension is the diameter of the wheel, not the overall diameter of the tire.
The 205 or 225 value is the width of the tire in millimetres.
The "75" value is the ratio between tire width and sidewall height, as a percentage - this is called the "aspect ratio".

A wider tire - 225 mm instead of 205 mm in this case - also means more sidewall height if the aspect ratio is the same; more sidewall height between the rim of the wheel and the ground means that the trailer sits higher.

If the 15" tire has the same width and aspect ratio - so in this case it would be a ST205/75R15 - then the height difference would be only due to the wheel. It's the radius (not diameter) of wheel and tire between the axle and ground, so a one-inch increase in wheel diameter means a half-inch increase in radius, and thus a half-inch increase in trailer height.

Thanks for the explanation. I hate to sound dense, but I am not clear on the difference between wheel vs. tire. (I do know that the tire is the black round thing that is on the axle)

... and the wheel is the round metal thing in the middle of the tire. Although very different technically, I have noticed that many people seem to use "wheel" and "tire" as interchangeable terms. It makes sense to me that if you don't have a reason to know the difference - you don't sell or repair either of them - then there's a good chance you don't know the difference.
