So does the HMMWV (Hummer H1), but that's just a little thing in comparison.

The axle weight rating of the Ram pickup with coil springs is not limited because the springs are coils. Yes, ride was chosen as a higher priority than load capacity, so the springs are soft; if you want both, you are supposed to buy the optional air suspension, or move up to the Ram 2500 (also with coil springs) with higher axle capacities and payload.
Hi: Ram Expert... The Ram air suspension makes it near impossible to add bed rails for a 5th. wh. setup. The compressor is located right under the truck box floor. It was one of the options I didn't want!!! Alf

I keep hearing the fuel economy is the same on the 3.5L EcoBoost as the 5.0 V8. I don't know, theres 300 trucks in the lot at my work, all different brands.

I hear the 2.7L is pretty good on gas.

My only point is that the 1260 pound cargo limit that the OP is looking at is a very low number for someone contemplating an Escape 5.0. If you are planning to violate the cargo limit, then I guess that doesn't matter.
It has been said that “confession is good for the soul.” So I will confess. My 2015 F-150 2.7L EB had a relatively low cargo capacity (1,479 lbs), which was 172 lbs less than my “purchased off the lot 2012 F-150 3.5L EB. One day I took a bathroom scale outside, weighed myself, and then weighed myself holding every item that I wanted to transport in the truck bed and/or the back seat. I did this after hauling the trailer to a certified scale (Pilot/Flying J) to determine the pin weight, which turned out to be 740 lbs. When I added all the numbers, my total cargo weight including my weight and that of my spouse, the hitch, and a Roadmaster active suspension was 1,549, putting me 60 lbs overweight. When I asked a very knowledgeable service manager at one of the local Ford dealerships for his thoughts, he sort of laughed and told me he would be concerned if I were 1,000 lbs overweight, but not, as he put it, a “minor” amount. Thinking that this was contrary to Ford Corporate policy, I visited two other Ford dealerships and spoke with their service managers as well as a technician described as “our top suspension specialist” and was essentially told the same thing by all three of them. Not willing to eliminate my grill, our two camp chairs, and our patio mat took their advice and did not worry about it. Yes, I knowingly towed for 5 years with a load 60 lbs above the weight on the pillar sticker saying that the combined weight of passengers and cargo not to exceed 1,479 lbs. That included two trips from Florida to Osoyoos, as well as other destinations.
So I have confessed. I knowingly exceeded the recommended capacity. Did it result in handling problems? Did it damage suspension components? The answer to both questions is no. But when that truck’s electronics were fried by EMP from a nearby lightning strike in August of 2019, I ordered a 2020, going back to the 3.5L EB. The 2.7L EB may be “adequate,” but IMO the 3.5 L is superior. And I ordered the heavy duty towing package along with a few “weighty” items. Its cargo capacity is 1,937 lbs, putting me nearly 400 lbs below the max cargo capacity. That gives me peace of mind in relation to any legal issues but does it make me feel any safer? Absolutely not. And nobody should interpret my comments here to mean that I believe or that it is OK to exceed stated cargo capacity.

Our GMC Canyon diesel was scheduled for a build date of yesterday, looking forward to our new truck.

The wife will be getting rid of her Toyota Highlander and switching to the GMC, hope our reliability doesn’t take too big of a hit. Time will tell.

Some folks will tell you to not exceed 50% of the capacity of your tow vehicle. I think that's nuts. But I guess I am a bit of a stickler in that I simply don't recommend overloading, especially since Escape trailers can be towed by such a wide array of perfectly reasonable tow vehicles. Maybe I'm conservative because if I roll across a DOT scale 60 lbs overweight, the fines start at $3000 and I'm parked. It's a bad way to start a test trip.....not that I have experience or anything.

Would I really freak out at 60 lbs overweight in a pickup? Not really. But I think most people gain 'stuff' over time. If you set out to buy a truck knowing you are going to be 200+ lbs overweight (which is where the OP is now) then after a few years you will probably be 400 lbs overweight.

You start with an Escape 5.0, two humans, three big dogs and then you start wanting some firewood, or bikes, or a generator, or other stuff that needs to be in the bed. It is what it is.

Jeffrey yes you do have a point. Were you referring to us being overweight or OP? We are definitely pushing it for sure

I took another look at the trailers online today and was looking at the 21 NE and C. I do like the layout in the C. I'm not sure where the dogs would sleep though. Maybe my husband can take the dinette bed. LOL

We did buy that dam truck though so now of course I'm fretting about all these details

Going with a pull trailer would allow us to actually use the space in the truck bed. And the lesser hitch weight would give us play weight

Now I don't know. My husband really likes the 5. It looks to me like the 21 C is more spacious with a bigger kitchen area. And I do need to keep him fed...

NorthernGirl,

I read this thread twice, and I'm still not sure which truck you ended up with. You mention the Chevy and the Ram, and then said you bought "it". The towing capacity of 9200 lbs matches my son's 2020 Chevy diesel, so hopefully that's what you got.

Our Ram has been to dealers in several states for more check engine lights and recalls than any other vehicle I've ever owned. I know most of the service writers at our local dealer by name. So far everything was covered by warranty and no cost to me, but it's been a constant chore.

If by chance you got the Ram, make absolutely sure every recall and re-flash has been performed.

We got to visit Whitehorse in May a couple of years ago. The underground pipes hadn't thawed yet, and we only found electric at the campgrounds. We did find one spot that had shower water delivered by truck.

Bill

Hi Bill

We bought the Ram ultimately. We initially were buying a chev diesel brand new but it was $83k Can as opposed to $43k for the 2018 Ram

We bought a 4 year extended warranty for it. After reading your post I’m glad we did

If it proves unreliable we”ll get rid of it and start over

Now to decide if we really want the 5 or would be better with a 21

May can be cool in the Yukon for sure. I’m glad you found someplace with power

Wow, $83K for a truck!!?? I shop all over, usually nationwide on Autotrader. The Nissan XD I just sold I flew to Grand Rapids one way to buy and drive back to TX because the price was so good that the $140 SWA ticket didn’t hurt. Then I only lost $3K when Carmax bought it from me, albeit they then listed it for $3K over what I originally paid for it, go figure! The new GMC was found far closer, in Snyder, a mere 5 hours away, but the price beat all the dealerships in SA and Austin by at least $4K. It is only an SLT and 2WD, but it’s got more bells and whistles than I usually have or need anyway. It’s also the first NEW truck I’ve bought since 81, I usually go the 2-3 year old used route as well....

Hi: Tford... The MSRP on my 2016 Ram Laramie Longhorn was $73,500CDN... and I thought that was a lot. Of course the "Dealer may sell for less". Alf

Those Longhorns are drop dead gorgeous. I priced out a new one and it was north of 90K Canadian

We got our 2018 Ram 1500 diesel Laramie for $52,000 including delivery, 4 year extended warranty etc. Still feels like a deal

I talked to a fellow at Escape yesterday. I can't remember his name. His take is we are pushing it trying to tow the 5 with this truck, given the number of dogs we have plus the gear I want to haul. I think we've settled on the 21 C, but we need to see one first to make sure there's enough room for the dogs and I on the bed

Otherwise we'll go with the NE so we can all sleep together

When I started out buying an Escape, I was sure I wanted the 5.0TA and was looking hard at a F150 to tow it. Through this process, I had a bad experience at my local Ford dealer, which made me mad enough I decided not to buy one. I then went into my Chevy dealer and test drove a Colorado diesel. I fell in love with it the first mile down the road and bought it on the spot. They wanted to sell it so badly I ended up paying somewhere near $8K less than I was prepared to pay for a F150.

While some folks here tow their 5.0TAs with a Colorado/Canyon diesel, I didn’t want to cut my payload that close. The payload on my truck is 1,390 lbs. So I ended up buying a 19. I have never regretted this decision. The reasons I’m so happy with the 19 are it pairs perfectly with my truck, and because it’s a bumper pull, I was able to put a canopy on the truck. This means I can comfortably travel with my 4 dogs (2 in the cab, 2 in the back), and I can put my fully-inflated fishing pontoon on the top of the canopy. It works well. Having secure storage in the bed of the truck, plus the ability to put my boat on top, are now variables I wouldn’t trade to have the larger 5.0TA.

This is just how the decision process goes sometimes! Hoping you have a similar experience and end up with exactly the right trailer for you! The great news is ALL Escapes are wonderful, and odds are you’ll be thrilled with whatever you drive home.

Salmo7000 thank you for this

That hard canopy sounds like a great idea. That would be ideal for us to carry our kayak and paddle boards. I wonder if the dogs would like riding in there

We have never looked at the 19. Hopefully we will get a chance to see them all in a couple of months when we drive down there

LOL on the Ford experience. Silly him
