I really appreciate this thread, because it and a couple of others have convinced me to purchase a Sherline tongue scale. I don’t have a 5.0TA, but I think it’s important for everyone to know exactly what they’re putting on the back of their tow vehicle. So far I’ve just been guessing at what my 19’s tongue weight is, but without actually measuring it, it’s just that... a guess.
On another RV forum, someone posted that upwards of 40% of vehicles on the highway are overweight, meaning they exceed the manufacturer’s ratings for GVWR, GCVWR, and of course payload. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but based on my own observations, I don’t doubt it. I don’t want to be in that 40%. Even with a 19 and a pickup with 1,390 lbs of payload, I suspect I’ve been close or even over.
But again, a simple weight measurement will tell a person exactly where they are and if they need to make adjustments or not.

Our 2002 Tundra SR5 4wd has a towing capacity of 7,100lbs. and payload of 1,512lbs.
It's funny how payloads have gone up and down over the years compared to the class designation. It seems that before extended cabs and crew cabs became the norm and before pickups became luxury passenger vehicles pretty much any 1/2 ton would have a payload of 2,000 pounds or more. Now with all the bells and whistles a 1/2 ton truck is often just that. Although some modern 1/2 tons can have a payload of around 3,000lbs.
Of course its always a compromise between ride quality and payload capacity.
I owned a 1982 Toyota pickup (Hilux) 4wd 8' bed, and it was called a 3/4 ton truck in the owners manual, and its payload was 1,500lbs. It's towing capacity was 3,500lbs I think. It was a real rough ride though, I remember hitting my head on the roof of the cab once going down the highway.

We won't get our 5.0 until late July but we have our truck. A 2018 F150 XLT Supercab with 2.7L ecoboost. 1,176 payload. If I had to do it again, I'd go with the 3.5L but this truck was the right price with a decent option list including tow mirrors, 36 gallon tank and brake controller. I've already installed the Andersen rail mount hitch. We'll be very careful when we load.

Hi: Shearwater... I understand your predicament. Any extra stuff of weight ie: the screen room or excess luggage goes at the back in the trailer dinette. That plus a full tank of fresh water acts to reduce the pin wt. It really helps where you locate the weight. Strange how a 1/2 ton can pull so much yet carry so little!!! Back on the "Slim-Fast" and lite beer again. Alf

That gave me some reassurance. I cannot vote as I do not have the truck yet - it just reached the Built status on the Ford vehicle order tracker. Anticipating a payload between 1300-1400 lbs range.
When I was placing the order, I was caught between dropping to a lower trim/option package and have around 1500 lbs of payload or to have something close to options I wanted with a payload around 1350 lbs. I went back and forth - engaged all my self restraint but found it lacking - and ordered one with the options I really valued like the massage seats I figured that pulling a trailer is hard work and having a massage while doing it might reduce the stress and strain just a bit.

my payload is a bit low 1300 but it works- turn over ball & Anderson hitch, small dogs, some light items in bed and heavy stuff goes in back of trailer tow with water. yes i will continue to diet!!!

Hi: JeffreyG... Well my Nissan Fronty could, but even that was only 1100#'s. Looks like I got all the heavy wait options. Crew cab, EcoD. engine, tow pkg., 20" wheels and tires w/ full size spare, IV under bed trailer hitch, bed liner. and tonneau cover!!! I am 'er unanimous in that it's a light wait workhorse. I might need a flagman walking in front when I tow. Alf

wow, thats only 30 lbs more payload than my 2008 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Offroad Access Cab had, although its GVWR was nearly 2000 lbs lighter.

well the GVWR is primarily determined by the suspension, brakes, and wheels, as well as the structural strength of the chassis and drive train. the curb weight is what it weighs when its built and equipped as it came out the door from the factory. the payload is the difference. so my Tacoma weighed about 4100 lbs curb weight, with a 5300 lb GVWR leaving a 1200 lb payload, while your Tundra weighs about 5900 lbs curb with a GVWR of 7100 lbs, leaving 1200 lb payload.

I'm still trying to figure out how buying a bigger, heavier vehicle increases tow rating. I has to haul it's own butt up the same hills.
