tongue weight on loaded 21

Has anyone measured their tongue weight on their loaded 21? If so, did you have a pair of 6v batteries in the tail, and were the water tank and propane bottles full?

Hey Allen, our 21 is due in August also but we won’t pick up till the Friday after Labor Day. When are you going to be picking yours up.

Mine was 500/3800 on the tongue/axle coming back from Osoyoos with 3/4 tank fresh and 2 weeks of provisions. Also maybe an additional pound of poutine around my waist.

My current tongue weight is 400. This is a winterized trailer with full propane tanks, 2 6v's, and misc stuff in the front box. With a 1/4 full water tank and usual camping items, weight is ~450.

Loaded for travel, with the fresh water tank and propane full, we have a tongue weight around 440-460 lbs. Total trailer weight is 4600. This seems to be fairly typical of the 2017 and newer 21's.

And yes, this is with the two 6v batteries.

Hi Oldtimer,

Not sure when we will pick it up, but probably in August sometime likely at the earlier end. I want to bring it home to install solar and some other stuff before our main fall trip starting in September.

loaded with food + clothing for 6 days - 3 people
tongue weight is 440-450

i believe total weight is about 4400 - with hvac, dual solar, etc.

I can see the difference between my 500/3800 with the classic and the newer models as I had a single group 29 in my Escape and now they are installing dual 6 batteries in the rear which gives you a somewhat lower tongue weight but a little more total weight for the new style.

Thanks John, that is great info. By any chance did you have the storage box on the front of the trailer?

I intend to install my solar on a post up front, so was wondering if I will get anywhere near the 600# tongue weight limit of the Tacoma. It seems unlikely from these figures that I will have a problem.

i do have the storage box up front.... not too much heavy stuff in it. Not at all.

and

i believe you should keep tongue weight at 10% to 12% - a serious safety issue.

and by putting solar on a post up front wouldn't you be way higher than 12%?

Various standards are quoted, often up to 15% of the trailer weight. Even if I got to 600 pounds, which now looks very unlikely, that would still be just a shade over 13%, so I am not worried. I have a dual cam anti-sway weight distribution hitch, so I expect that anything inside of the more generous 15% limit should behave fine.

I picked one up when it was on sale, total cost to Florida including foreign money conversion fee and shipping was under $35 so it would be around $8 or $9 more now. It's easier to use and good for a fast check of hitch weight. It's not as accurate but was within 20 Lbs or so of what the Sherline displayed so it's good for a quick check of your hitch weight. I found stacking 3 of the stabilizer pads and setting it on top worked perfect to check hitch weight. Then when done I crank the trailer back up, remove the scale and back the truck into place.

If you ask they will give you the weight for your trailer with the options you picked.

For instance here is what was sent for our 19.

I have calculated your trailer weight based on your options. We did make a minor adjustment to the water weight which now puts your total trailer weight at 3489 lbs. Remember, this is the weight of your trailer with all of the options you selected, water, propane, etc. If you are traveling with no water your trailer would weigh 234 lbs. less. Based on the GVWR of 5,000 lbs. for this trailer, you would still have 1511 lbs. of cargo capacity when traveling with full water

So it's a "calculation", and they don't actually place it on a scale ?

Hmmm...sure would be nice to get "real" numbers.

It's in Kilograms but the sticker says 2272 KG which works out to 5008 Lbs.
Fresh water weight is 106 Kg ( 233.5 Lb) and heater is 23 Kg (50.7 Lb) And says I can carry 687 Kg (1514 Lb) with the above setup.
So the trailer weighs 1585 Kg (3494 Lbs) wet.
It's close to the email figures, I did add the EMS after the email so that may account for the additional pounds.
