Tow Escape 19' with Highlander Hybrid?

We newly retired boomers are just getting into the world of travel trailers and, after months of research, are in the market for a used 19' Escape. I've done lot's of research regarding the feasibility of using a HiHy for a TV. Seems that most of the used 19' Escapes come close to the 3500 lb. tow capacity of the Hybrid. Doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room, and we don't want to rule out mountain driving, which would be extra demanding on a vehicle. Before totally ruling out the Hybrid, though (and before deciding which to buy), I thought I'd check in with the forum to see if anyone has actually had any experience -successful or otherwise - towing a 19 footer with the Highlander Hybrid (V-6, AWD). Thanks for any feedback! John

It is my guess that the Highlander Hybrid would *not* have enough torque to be peppy as you'd want it.

for example - merging onto a moving freeway.

or getting up a mountain ... faster than 40 mph, for example.

and I dont think it would have enough 'capacity' to really make you feel safe and secure.

Do you already own the Highlander Hybrid?

The 19's exceed towing capacity of 3500. You would need the nonhybrid version.

Thanks for feedback, LA. No, have not bought the Highlander yet, but looking more and more like we'll have to go with the gas only with it's 5000 tow capacity.

It's not even a question. Depending on the trailer options you'll be around 4,000 lbs with a fully loaded (ready to camp) 19. Definitely recommend 5,000 lb tow capacity.
