The only thing I'll add to this 4WD discussion is it's not always about the weather. I live 8 miles up a dirt road, with a grade of 6%. In addition, I almost always camp off of dirt roads that usually involves some sort of slope to get to the site. Just to get home towing my 19, I have to put my truck in 4WD, even when the road surface is bone dry, because the rear wheels start spinning from the weight of the trailer. I have a canopy on the truck, at least 450-lbs of tongue weight on the back, and really good high traction tires, but it still does it. Same thing towing uphill out of the campsites I use.

While I might be able to make it up the road without 4WD, I'd rather not push the truck that hard and wear my tires.

If the only places you're anticipating camping are flat and/or accessed with good paved roads, you should be able to make 2WD work. Others do and seem to have no trouble. With the 5.0TA, you'll have more weight on the back of the truck, and that weight will be centered right over the rear axle, which may well minimize the problem.

Hi: Shelliro... I must have a 4X4 tug to boost my image. Our present Ram EcoDiesel 4X4 looks better if I wear cowboy boots also. No sandals in this babe!!!

Hey Alf
How do those Naconas clean up compared to sandals if there’s a little black tank miscalculation? Paints a picture don’t it?
When wore kabooie boots in college we called them cockroach killers or on Saturday nights
s.... kickers.
I always had Justin’s. My buddies had Naconas and Tony Llamas.

Hi: Iowa Dave... As close as I can get are "Blundstones". A cross between a bedroom slipper and a cowboy boot. Comfy... but tough. http://www.blundstone.com

Mew boots

I have a new pair of all rubber ankle high Grundens. I hate getting damp feet from the foggy foggy dew so I thought I’d try these slip on, commercial fisherman tread jobs. I don’t like to fall down and go boom.

Hey Dave,

Are you implying that hip boots are appropriate footwear at the dump station?

New ones

I think they were Columbia’s when I heard the story should have been LaCross. Only time I’ve seen a tear from a grown Canadian man. Of course I had tears too but they were from laughter.

I have pulled 2 different big 5ers, a horse trailer and a flat bed, also 2 motorhomes with and without toad behind. So I'm comfortable towing. I realize the 5.0 definitely is not as heavy as my old 5ers. Happy about that and shorter this time too. What I have now is overkill for sure. 2001 Ford F350 crew 8ft bed and 7.3 diesel with almost no mileage. We have 100 gal tank in the back, nice to fill up when cheap and not in Calif. It's that 177" wheelbase that takes 1/4 acre to turn that is so annoying. We had some critter damage a few years ago and I'm not totally positive all was repaired or repaired correctly. So do I trust it out in the middle of nowhere - old broad alone ?? Not so sure lately. Alternator last month, windshield wiper motor today. It's a 4x2 and have never felt I needed more. No deep sand but places where others might not tread when I was going to dog agility shows. Didn't think I was going to get another 5er so sold my B&W hitch. Those Anderson hitches sound really nice. Seeing all the places people are going has gotten my feet to start itching to travel. Hubby not well and very old and not into camping so I have to wait for now. Love it up here. So far the Ram 5.7 hemi and GMC Sierra 3.5 double cab I sat in (bottom level) both really uncomfortable to sit in. Bummer. Have appointment tomorrow to look at F150. Would really like the double cab and 6ft bed. But may have to go with the popular crew 5.5ft bed. Better be comfortable like my truck now that's for sure. Wish me luck

Does your 5.0TA have the axle lift?

Hi: Jack... Our 5.0TA was built for our 2010 Nissan Fronty in 2014. No hi-lift on the trailer. The 4X4 Ram EcoD. with 20" wheels and tires just fits under it. My RVTech put his thumbnail on the bed rail and stretched out his fingers and said "It'll fit". I wish I was that confident!!!
We raised the pin box up and set the hitch down and it did. Level tow too!!! Alf
