Towing with a FJ cruiser....

Took Quahog out this weekend with the new tug, 2012 Toyota FJ with 4.0 motor, had to wait until 500 miles- got 17 mpg coming to to mini rally here in Pa., will check again going home and report back. Quahog was full.

Good to hear that your FJ seems to manage towing your Quahog with few problems Jim. But how does it do towing your 19?

Cheers

Just a lot of rain but no damage and my Escape kept the fence from blowing down!! Another good reason to have an Escape!!

Coming home I got closer to 14 mpg, I think there was 30-40 miles in the first trip that was non towing, giving me a false hope. Still 14 is better than 12 with my Ram and it only has 700 miles on it. Supposed to get better later on, I hope.

Jim, not sure that you have commented on this before or not. Are you using a weight distribution hutch on your FJ when towing your 19'?

No weight distribution nor sway control while using the FJ.

Have any of you towed with the newer FJ Cruisers in the mountains and towing the 19' Escape? If so, what kind of mileage did you get? Also, what is your general mileage towing with this vehicle. Do you feel this vehicle is more than adequate to pull this trailer as I know some of you are doing it. The 2013 models now show 4700 gross weight towing verses 5000 pounds and assume this won't really affect the 19' Escape.

My experience thru Pennsylvania's mini mountains (2-3000 ft) reduces my economy from around 20 mpg to 15 mpg. No issue with power. My FJ is 2012.

You are getting 20mpg on flat pulling the trailer? That's awesome. We are thinking of getting an FJ to pull with and be able to do some off roading with it. We go to Colorado every year and would save on renting a jeep to go on the back roads. Do you feel like the Escape could handle being on gravel roads but not on 4WD roads? Is it a well insulated camper such as all season? We have to look at the whole package as we are coming from a 25' Airstream and F250 4x4 pickup with 460 engine. We are trying to get more mobile as well as better gas mileage.

Sorry, 20 mpg not towing and 15 mpg towing, sorry for the miscommunication.

No problem but that sounded good anyway. 15 mpg is great anyway. Thanks you.

I'll say most of us would dream of a "honest" 15 mpg while towing. From what I can tell so far my yukon is around 13-14 mpg.

I am sure that CPAHarley2008 is referring to 15 US mpg in his post, Dave, which to us Canadians is about 18 Imp mpg (about 15.7 Litres per 100 km). That is way better than the 13-14 Imp mpg you are happy with (or were you also talking US mpg ).

For what it's worth, 2 summers ago I tracked our mileage from Vancouver to Yellowstone National Park and back. I tow a 19' with a 2008 Tacoma (4 litre V6). The total towing distance was 1830 miles. My towing mileage was 13.5 miles/US gal. (about 16.3 miles/IMP gal). Every time I unhooked the trailer I would fill with gas and I filled again before I hooked up, so my mileage is based on towing only. My travelling speed would usually be 55 - 60 mph occasionally straying to 65. Trailer weight was around 3700#'s. Wish it was better, but "it is what it is".
