Towing with passengers in the 5th wheel?

As we all know, California has some strange laws. Some really good laws and some......well......questionable. As a kid, I use to love to ride in the back of a pick-up but can't do that anymore....not even if it has a camper shell, unless there is a seat with seat belts for each person.

Awhile back at a boat and RV show I remember over hearing a conversation about towing with people in the towed vehicle and the salesman was saying that you can't tow with people in a regular trailer but that you can tow with people in a 5th wheel.

Is it legal to tow in the US, Canada, one state/province vs. another, etc.? Does anybody know the law on this?

Doubtful, very doubtful you'll find one law about this. Kind of like hooking up two towables together. BUT, to me... it's not something I'd do even if it were legal, have you seen how much "trailers" bounce? I'm always reading about stuff that seems to be coming out of cabinets or off counters. I can't imagine it would be a comfortable ride. YMMV

Re: Towing with passengers in the 5th wheel?

Just found the answer.....at least for some states. It appears it is legal in some states, provided certain conditions are met. California seems to have one of the most stringent.....safety glass, seat belts, visual or two way verbal communication.

Which brings up another question.....is the glass used in an Escape safety glass?

Here's a site that will give you most rules and regulations for all the States and Provinces for almost anything to do with trailers, motorcycles, mirrors etc.

Re: Towing with passengers in the 5th wheel?

Having seen the remains of a sticky following an accident on Highway #1, I would suggest that nobody ride in a trailer or fifth-wheel.
And, I wouldn't be keen on riding in some of these motor homes, unless I was buckled in.
