When we sold our pop-up last year the front end was badly dented and pitted from throwing rocks and other debris up over the years. Logging roads, gravel, and construction all did their damage. We are picking up our new 19 in in July and are considering Towtectors or RockTamers. Anybody using those products, or others to protect the front end of their trailers?
I have used Rock Tamers with good success. I had them on a 2004 Dodge 3500 dually pulling a 34' 5th wheel and didn't have any problems with rocks. Now have them on my 1500 Silverado and am fairly confident that they will do the job on our Escape 19 that we pick up on June 6th. I had the storage box mounted on front of the Escape so that will take the brunt of the rocks that get past the Rock Tamers. I saw an Escape 19 a few weeks ago that didn't have the box and that person had white bed liner sprayed on the front of the camper and it looked good with no damage. I believe that it was done at the factory but not positive about that.
If you decide on the Rock Tamers shop online and be patient and you can find some good deals with free shipping. Good luck with it.
One of the reasons we chose the front storage box for our Escape 19 was to help protect the front of the trailer from rocks that may be thrown up from the gravel roads. Have not yet driven/towed enough on gravel roads to know how effective it is, but we will eventually find out.
I have used RockTamers for a couple of years now with good results. I have them on a Silverado 2500 HD diesel to protect a 19’ Escape. They work as advertised but ours had to be modified with aluminum plate because of the diesel exhaust. The arms that hold the mud flaps are designed to sit back from the truck so if I had a front box on the Escape I would be concerned they might restrict the turning radius.
Thanks for the good feedback. I've checked a couple of boating forums, as well as a couple other RV sites. It seems that people are happy with both solutions, so both must be helping to some extent. I didn't realize the the RockTamers were that far behind the hitch.
I'm not planning on the storage box right now, but if I do go that way I'd probably like to protect it as well.
Somewhere I've seen a picture of an Escape 19 with what looks like removable flexible guards on the front of the trailer.
I've driven on a fair number of gravel roads with my Escape 17 with the front storage box, and so far the Line-X coating that is standard on the box has prevented any nicks or dents to both it & the front of the trailer.
