I'm new here and reading through several posts, yet I'll still ask, if you don't mind..

I bought the Tacoma (setup with tow package V6) to haul the Rpod around. For extended trips (over 2 months which we do) we find we want something setup a bit different and looking into the Escape 5.0 5th wheel.

It seems I have the capability with the Tacoma, yet I'll ask you folks. What are you thoughts and anyone here towing with one?

What's your payload a cording to the sticker on the truck?

It is my understanding that the bed in a Tacoma is constructed of a composite material and is not suitable to a 5th wheel hitch. Some here have used a Nissan Frontier with a 5.0 TA, but you probably want “more truck” to tow a 5.0TA.

To me the 1175 payload is not enough, I've had my pin weight up as high as 750 lbs. Doesn't leave much for you, passenger/s, and any gear in the truck. But that's just my opinion.

You may have to settle on an Escape 21 which is identical to the 5.0 inside from the door rearward. Has a bigger bath but a smaller bed compared to the 5.0 from the door forward.

A 2016 Tacoma wasn't enough truck for my 21. While it could pull it (and stop it), it spent too much time in 3rd gear at 4000 RPM, and was overloaded by at least 150 pounds. I do carry lots of stuff since I'm on the road for months at a time. Replaced it with a Ford F150.

If you like the Toyotas...I do...come check out my rig. I tow a 5.0 TA with a Toyota Tundra 4.6 liter double cab 4 x 4. It is plenty of truck and empty almost the same mileage as the old Tacoma V - 6s but the power when you need it to not overwork the truck. You still have to be careful about payload as you will in any 1/2 ton truck. I towed a Scamp 19 with a 4.0 Liter V - 6 and it worked HARD a lot, the Tundra just purrs along. People tell me the Ford Ecoboost is another good choice. The Tundra works well for me. (And for the number crunchers on this site I AM NOT OVERLOADED) I am in S. Vermont if you want to look sometime. Question though...are you looking at the old 5.0 single axle or the newer 5.0 TA (Twin Axle)?

Would much prefer the twin axle.

We purchased a 2018 Toyota Tundra, Double Cab, with the intention of getting a 5.0TA. While everything looked good on the surface (and verified by the salesman ... right), after we had the truck, a closer look at the weights revealed that the Tundra, with it's 9,900 lb towing capacity, only had a wimpy payload weight of 1,630 lbs. After doing the math and querying people on the forum, we realized that, while we could probably tow the 5.0TA, it would be close. I don't like "close" ... I want "more". Thus, we changed to a 21' trailer and are more than excited for our pickup date in September. Our feelings were ... why would we want to spend our time worrying about weights, etc., when we could be out enjoying our trailer.

If I were looking for a new truck it would be the F150 with the Ecoboost we came this >< close to buying one but it would not fit in our small driveway. Make sure you verify the capacity as they have several different options.

We drove the tundra and the Silverado both were nice trucks but the ecobeast beat them hands down in our opinion.

For comparison purposes, the payload on my 2018 SuperCab 6.5' bed 3.5 EcoBoost F 150 is 1824 lbs.
