Volkswagen Touareg TDI Diesel

We are considering replacing our current tow vehicle, a 2009 Silverado Duramax Diesel truck. It’s left over from the 5th wheel days. We have no complaints about the truck. It does a great job with the 19’ Escape no WDH required and it delivers a very comfortable ride. It just seems a little too big for the trailer and in preparation for retirement we are considering one multipurpose vehicle that would do it all. My wife will not drive the truck.

I have not checked our mileage when pulling the trailer but I don’t think it is much different from normal use. We have about 60,000 Km on the vehicle and the average fuel consumption is 16.1 L/100 Km. Not great for general use.

Does anyone have any experience with the Volkswagen Touareg TDI Diesel as a tow vehicle for the 19’ Escape?

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated

Re: Volkswagen Touareg TDI Diesel

I was considering getting a Touareg Diesel because it seems that it would be a great match for the Escape 19. After talking to an owner and reading some forums, I gave up on the idea after hearing too many stories of serious electrical problems.

I always like to look to Consumers Report for reviews, not sure they are the best but show me an alternative. For what it is worth, they state on the redesigned 2011 model:

"reliability of the previous generation Touareg has consistently been below average."

Phil Edmonstone publishes new and used car guides. http://www.lemonaidcars.com/

Heard him on the radio a couple days ago and he recommended "NO" to Volkswagen and to Audi as they are very poor reliability after warranty.

Re: Volkswagen Touareg TDI Diesel

We looked at the Touareg diesel last year and passed on it even though it looks good and drives well but may not be dependable. We went for the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Dodge Hemi engine to tow our 19. We would buy it again because of the gas mileage, ride and performance. Also the Jeep is 3 feet shorter than the ford 150 supercrews that we used to own.

Hi: Bob120... I shouldn't comment about the VW other than to reiterate their poor record of repair... already stated.
I know you like the diesel but there's no price advantage for the fuel or mileage combination and you pay a hefty premium for the engine option.
We certainly love our new Nissan Frontier tug and our mpg runs 19.5 towing 26.5 not towing. When we retire it will be our primary vehicle.
For my money I'd be looking at the Nissan Pathfinder, the Toyota 4runner, or the Honda Pilot as an SUV with at least a 5000# tow cap. Alf

Don't know if it also applies to the Pilot, but Edmonston also said that the Honda Civic had dropped significantly in reliability and was no longer recommended.

My brother has a VW. Loves the car for the most part, but would not buy one again due to hassles and costs he incurred for repair work.

We own a Jetta, nice car would not buy another. Have named it "needie" as every so often something goes wrong.......... it's like it just needs to have some money spent on it.

Re: Volkswagen Touareg TDI Diesel

We now have a Dodge 1500 with a Hemi engine, and it pulls very good.
Cuts down to 4cylinders when going is easy.
We get about 15-16 miles to a gallon when towing.

Diesel is more expensive here in Whitehorse.

Gas is 1.26 @ litre.
Diesel is 1.43 @ litre

Anything vehicle that will pull 5000 pounds will pull a 19 ft. Escape.
