Weighed the New 19

I went to the CAT scales this morning to get a weight of the new trailer. The trailer was "as delivered" from the factory except the propane tanks were full. There were no personal belongings inside and all water tanks were as empty as I could get them. When on the scale I unhooked from the truck and put the tongue jack on one scale and both rear wheels on another scale. I got:

Tongue: 400 lbs.
Axles: 2640 lbs.

My trailer is pretty loaded so I feel comfortable with the readings and know that I can safely carry a good load.

Re: Weighed the New 19

Steve, I am supposing that your tongue weight will decrease when you load up? It will be interesting, however, to see if it stays the same or what.

Could you give your options again, please? AC? Stereo? I know you have an oven. No TV there yet I assume. Front box, insulation. As I recall, you have just about everything. Solar panel, right?

Re: Weighed the New 19

Depends where in the trailer you put the weight. If you load 60 cases of beer at the front you'll increase the tongue weight. If you put them under the bed at the back, you'll lift the rear of your tow vehicle off the ground.

Best drink that beer, or stack it over the wheels.

Everything you do, adding weight fore and aft affects the balance of the trailer and the tongue weight. It's just a teeter-totter.

Re: Weighed the New 19

Cathy-yes our trailer has most of the options: ac, ft. box, oven, insulation pkg., solar, (TV not yet installed), chrome wheels-that's probably most of the heavy stuff. In the future when we load up and head off for a longer trip I will probably go back to the scales with the trailer connected to the truck. I know when we had the Casita I never came close to the weight limit so I am really not too worried now. The only major difference is that the stuff for the trailer, i.e. blocks, hoses, cords, etc will now go in the front box instead of the truck bed. It will just be a little learning curve on the best way to load. Also our fresh water tank is mounted inside behind the axle and i always travel with some water in the tank.

Re: Weighed the New 19

Baglo, I ordered a Sherline at about 5 p.m. one day and it was at the door the next day, UPS ground. McMasters-Carr. 1000 lbs. We have not tried it yet, of course, but it will be very handy. Once we know we are not overweight on the totals which I am sure we will not be, it will be great to just use that Sherline whenever we load up.

We are going to print out that guide to have a good look at it. Thanks.

Re: Weighed the New 19

I have the Sherline scale. I ordered through etrailer.com and they only sold it with the gauge that reads to 2,000 lbs.
I would specify the 1,000 lb. gauge and I may replace the gauge if it doesn't cost too much.

From Sherline:

For maximum accuracy, use a gauge that will put your expected final measurement in about the middle of the gauge's range. (For example: for tongue weights of about 1000 lb. use a gauge that reads to 2000 lb.) The reason for this is that pressure gauges of this type are accurate to within about 2% in the middle ranges, but accuracy decreases at extreme low or high readings. To provide a gauge a few percent more accurate would increase the cost by 10 times or more. The supplied gauge was chosen as the most cost effective solution to providing a result that is sufficiently accurate for trailer weighing purposes. (The Sherline scale is not intended to be used for trade; i.e., items priced by weight.)
