Hello forum, i most likely will have our trailer delivered to Madison Wi. We live in southeast Iowa. Now to the chase, any good camping tips for our trip up ? We would be interested in all parts of state, free or pay.

Kind regards,

WI spots

If you choose, your 1st night could be at Lake Mendota County Park, an urban campground on Lake Mendota in Madison. Dane County also has 2 other county campgrounds. Do a search.
Nearby is Gov. Dodge S.P., about 50 miles SW of Madison. Big park, several lakes and campgrounds, very scenic. Wyalusing S.P. is on mouth of the Wisconsin river to the Mississippi, big and scenic also.

Devils Lake S.P. near Baraboo is very scenic and very popular.
After that, you have to be more specific of wants, interests, desires. Tons of places, state forests up north are nice and numerous.

One of the “other” urban campgrounds that HabberDabber mentioned is Lake Farm County Park, right on a premier bike trail system, convenient to Madison sightseeing. Lake Kegonsa State Park is nearby. Devil’s Lake is one of the top five state parks in Wis. Whitewater Lake and the adjacent Southern Kettle Morraine. Note that Tom nor I have mentioned a private campground.

New Glarus Woods SP, primitive and rustic. Blue Mound SP. Dodgeville Walmart. You must be planning for an overnight stay on a weekend. We booked those sites 11 months ago, to the minute (no second) reservations opened. Now you may have to look at private CG’s, out of my skill set.

Certainly, any date on a weekend is problematic. Where did you check? Some are more popular or smaller than others. Don't give up.

That changes things a bit. Is your interest in staying in one place or exploring? How far do you wish to travel? What do you want to do? All can help.

Tom and I have camped extensively in Northern Wis. That is what we refer to as “up North”, but as you may guess the term means different locales to different people. The area I prefer is close to the Michigan border. Tom most certainly has his favorite as well.

Beside “up north” the best known locations are the touristy Lake Geneva area, Door County, and the mentioned Madison area. I think Door County has some of the most unique geography in the state and is like visiting the sea shore. Peninsula SP is another of the top five parks in Wis. An alternative is nearby Potawatomi SP. Or one of the better known private campgrounds, Wagon Wheel is central to Door County.

Give more of your interests and perhaps some of the dozen+ Escape owners in Wisconsin will chime in.

Please detail your pick-up trip desires, if you want further guidance. Where do you want to go, what do you want to see, and do? Your brief posts have not conveyed your wishes.

Learning curve

Well my wish is to learn to pull the trailer and make sure everything works. Never pulled one, never drove a full sized pickup. Had thought about Wisconsin and Michigan.

Hi: johnnvy... Welcome to trailering in general and Escape specifically. One roadblock you might have experienced is that all those new... through the roof RV sales, will be filling up the campsites this year. Sorry I can't be of more help as it's one area of the near north we haven't spent time in with our 5.0TA... YET!!!
You will get the hang of it as long as folks give you the room to maneuver. Alf

If you pick it up in Madison, WI, I can, if available, come to your pick-up site, discuss, and advise and make sure all is OK. Can you practice ahead of time hooking up , backing up with someone's else rig? Even practice on a utility trailer could be beneficial.

P.S. When is your delivery scheduled, and where in Madison?

Search the forum, there are checklists for pre-departure, hook-up, unhooking. Print them out and use them. There is much to know and do, and some items are very important, but folks do it everyday.

Thx Habber, appreciate the kind words. We have to give Escape 2 weeks notice if we want it delivered. Build completion date initially was 4-15, i have not heard anything different. I should be able to find out drop off location. Will keep you posted. Thx so much !

Kind regards,
